2004 Tacoma

Im thinking of buying a 04 Tacoma 2.7 ext cab. I was wondering if any body really dislikes anything about it, or if anybody has had any trouble yet. I currently own a 91 3.o and it is giving me too much problems. Would you say though that the 91 is better than the 04 or is it totally different?

I had a 2001 Xcab 2.7L tacoma for acouple years. Great truck. the power is great for offroad and in town. but it is gutless on the freeway. I now own a 3.4L V6 and I have no regrets about the upgrade.

I have a '93 2WD V6 5spd and a new '04 S-Runner (2WD V6 5spd). I love my beat-up ol' 93. Frankly, if I coulda bought a **new** '93 rather than an '04, I would have...

They are different trucks. Your '91 was built in Japan; all Tacos are built in California. 2WD Tacos sit higher than the last generation (which I personally don't like). After the 3.0, the 2.7 is probably gonna seem a bit weak. Recent 2.X owners I know complain (somewhat) about this - especially if they've got automatics.

I've only owned Toyota trucks for the last 20 years, and I still swear by them. I still think they're the best mini trucks made.

Im going to buy a manual, I imagined it would seem a bit slow. I agree with what you said about buying the 3.0 new again.

I have heard that the 2.7L is roughly equivalent to the old 3.0L, but I have never driven a 3.0. My Tacoma was manual, and downshifting with screaming rpms is your friend with the 2.7. the deckplate mod works well with it, you can fit a 4". Don't let people convince you that you can't because of the ribbed air box, because a 4" fits perfectly. My best mileage in it was 27 mpg while moseying along through Yellowstone Park. Worst was 12 mpg while towing two ATV's up and down a pass over the Continental Divide.

Thumbs up

I purchased a 2004 Xtra-cab Taco, 4WD, 5 spd., 2.7L engine. It's my first truck and I couldn't be happier. Bought 2 months ago. It's a solid feeling truck, great spartan interior, fantastic build quality. The power of the 2.7L is adequate, I didn't buy it to stop light race. I'm very glad I bought it now, cause the '05 Tacos (IMHO) look terrible. The current models and older are perfect. I have no complaints whatsoever. Bring on the snow!

Talking 04 taco ext 4x 2.7...

just picked her up a couple weeks ago. love it love it! the 2.7 is great. no complaints at all. eager to get her ready for the dirt though! ...sliders, cap, deckplate, tires...

i agree on the 05's... they had a couple on the lot; they look like crap. how is that a mini anymore?? 1" smaller in dimensions... rediculous. i had to get my 04 while i still could.

I really like my 04...only gripe is I wish it had more power, and the clock was in a different spot....btw I have the 3.4..

I love the 05's...the interior is like a lexus, and it has 55 more horsepower, plus a ton of other little things...

I love my 04 (3.4l), my only gripes are the stupid clock location, the factory cruise sucks on hills, and the steering wheel is too big. I feel like I'm driving a school bus with that thing.

I drove an 04 2.7l regular cab, it was a bit too underpowered for me. Not really any better than my old 22RE IMHO.

Red 59, I just pulled the trigger on an '04 2.7 manual x-cab 4x4, went to see the '05's but the factory cash back and deep dealer incentives on the 04's were too much to resist, not many left on the lot's around here though. Prior to that I drove a '90 3.0 x-cab 4x4 since new, the 2.7 is just as quick with a bit less tourqe and better gas mileage, you just have to stir the shifter a bit more. Someoe else mentioned the clock and for me the turn signal indicators and high beam pilot lamps are hidden by the dash cowel, other than that it seems about the same.
Kinda wierd though after 14 years driving the '90 the '04 is different yet very much the same, kinda like having sex with your sister-in-law The '90 wasn't giving me any trouble, I just got tired of it (165k) I did get a very good price for it privatly.

Question

Why not find an 04 V6 5 spd? The 05's are comming out and I'm sure most stealers want the "old" Tacoma off there lot to make space for the 05's. I'd be willing to bet great deals on 04's are out there. Just my .02

Edit: My last Tacoma was an 02' 2.7L 4x4 5 spd excab. It was vary scary (slow going) trying get up to speed when getting on any freeway.

Craig.

I second the V6. You should be able to get a good deal on one with the 05 coming in. The V6 is just adequate in my opinion, but I live in high altitude. Go for the V6 unless gas milage is a concern.
