2004 4Runner Valve filter noise

Hello all,

After reading Mish's problems and reading other people's noise problems, I am concerned. I am going to buy a 2004 4Runner 4WD Sport in the next couple of months. I have read about the Valve noise problem on the 4th gen V6's and I was wondering if the V8 4runners experience the same noise. I know the V6 is a new engine and the V8 is not new.

I was planning to buy a V6, but if the noise can not be fixed, or has not been fixed in 2004, should I get a V8 instead??

I am probably not going to tow anything so I initally thought I would get a V6, but the Valve noise concerns me.

thanks in advanced

Ken

Ken:

I have not had any problems w/ my v8 Keep in mind that the v8 has been around since 97 so you know the v8 is a reliable engine. The only thing new is the 5A/T which debuted 2003 so that was only concern. But I must say I'm pretty happy w/ the new tranny!

As for the v6 engine, I really don't know much but I would suspect that Toyota would have already fixed this problem since the v6 has been around for atlesat 1 yr now.

I'm sure others will chime in

BUMP!

Don't confuse normal operating noises with being a bad engine, Mish whole problem with his Toyota was that it sounded like a diesel engine, I have yet to hear a V6 4th Gen sound anything like a diesel, infact if your undecided and unsure what exactly it's suppost to sound like go take a new Pathfinder out for a test drive not an Armada, the VQ35 in it sounds almost identical to the 4.0 V6 in the 4Runner

Now that you have reference into what it sounds like from the Nissan you should be good to go.

When I got my 4Runner the dealer said 30 days 1500miles if you don't like it return it ask your dealer if they do the same, the dealer said they only offer that to customers cause noone returns Toyotas he did say their is a lemon here and their

I have a V6 -- in fact, it was one of the first ones built for the US market -- and have had no trouble with it at all. After Mish posted his video, I've checked mine several times for similar noise -- nothing unusual found at all. It just sounds like a normal engine to me.

There's no doubt that Mish had a bad engine. And it was taken care of, although with lots of hassle on his part. But to be fair, his seems to be the worst case that I've heard of so far.

I am taken care of!!?? Hell no, you have no idea what Toyta rep. did and what bull crap I had to listen to in order to return this truck. If I did not use my attorney, who simply outpowered Toyota's scum bag representative I would still be driving my rattle basket. And after all Toyota refused to pay legal fees. Anyways I am driving used, 2001 LX470 now and this truck is 110 times better built and supported by the same Toyota than my 4Runner was. I resent the fact that people that pay less than 40K for their wheels receive second grade treatment on all levels from Toyota. I am afraid to even think what Scion owners will get for warranty when those ugly ducklings start selling here, probably "30 minute off the lot" warranty or something. Anyways, I am done now, all better with whole bunch of playing in my head.

Hey Mish, sorry to hear that you had a bad experience, to say the least. It was painful to read all of your woes with your runner.

On Mish's post about the filter noise, gmmaspec says he hears the same thing on his V6 that he bought this month. Also I read in other forums that this problem persists. It looks like I will be getting a V8 Sport 4wd. I am sure the dealer would have some sort of 30-day thing, but I would like to avoid this problem as much as possible. That way, i can spend the time and money on mods!!

thanks-

Ken
