2002 4R ADD to Manual Hubs Possible?

I've searched the web and found several articles concerning converting ADD to manual hubs; however, all have been for earlier (2nd gen) 4R's. When I compare the photos in one of the articles with what I see when I remove the center cap from my front wheel, I don't see the same thing. In the articles they show a small grease cap surrounded by 6 bolts. On the 2002 there is a much larger grease cap and no visible bolts (maybe there're under the cap). So, I am leary that in the 3rd gen models something may have changed to make the ADD to manual conversion more difficult or impossible.

Does anybody have experience with ADD to manual hub conversion on a 3rd gen? I would appreciate any feedback before I jump into this project.

Vehicle is 2002 SR5, automatic transmission - not Sport model.

Found it using the flashing yellow SEARCH link at the top of the page.

Overall, it is pretty expensive and the benefit to cost ratio isn't very good. You could replace a broken CV a year and still be well under the cost of having manual hubs on a 3rd gen. The gas mileage factor was found to be a non issue, there is hardly a difference.

Yes, it can be done. It was easy for me since I bought Schaefers front end w/ manual hubs when he did his SAC. But there are other options.

1. Offroad Solutions offers a kit but is a bit spendy.

2. You can try and gather all the items like Steve did in his Junkyard Aisin Manual Hub swap

3. Find a manual hub Tacoma doing a SAC and buy his front end.

I had previously read the info on the Downey and ORS conversion kits and had dismissed them because they seemed to be neccessary only if you were going to lift the front end. I am not going for any lift - I just want manual hubs. Do you still need one of these expensive kits for simply converting to manual hubs?

Has there has been a change in the ADD system somewhere after the '95 that prevents an easy conversion to manual hubs?
