If you mean 17 city and 21 hwy then you are pretty much spot on. (for the V6) I think it would be a great vehicle for your son, and reliability is usually excellent. Just make sure he takes it for a test spin first, the 4Runner is a real truck and it drives a little top heavy.
![]() Edit: You have a 04 Tacoma, so you know exactly how they drive, nevermind!

I'm thinking with the prices of SUV's, you'd be able to drive that price down even more. You could even find a 4x4 for that much, I'm thinking.
But dependability wise, it should be solid, as long as maintenance was done. 90k maintenance includes timing belt and water pump, so take that into consideration of the purchase price.

Depending on where you are, and options it has, that is a reasonable price.
There are jokers round here trying to sell 2WD trucks for 9-12k. My friend just picked up a 2000 SR5 highlander edition (FULLY loaded minus leather) with 94k for $10,998 and that was from a dealer.

He was asking $8000 for it talked down to $7000..I just want a safe auto for him..Not interested in a 4x4 for him to tempting for him..Tires are 225/75/15 what would be the biggest tire I can out on..I was thinking maybe 30.9?

If you dont want a big ol offroad rig, just stick with the tires on there.

You don't want to get a 4x4 so he doesn't get tempted to off-road, but you want to put on bigger tires?? I'd get the 4x4 for resale value, and in case you need it for some reason. You can always take out the front axles if you're worried about him getting into trouble. ![]() Not saying $7000 is a bad price. But there is a guy on another forum that bought a 99 Limited 4x4 w/ 140k miles from a dealership, and the price sticker said $7800, so I'm sure he bought it for less than that. One owner, too.

Where are you located? That might help people on here gauge what's a decent price.
Sounds good to me. But I did get my 98 4x4 for $5,500 with 134k-ish

Oh, I hope you are kidding about the Corolla tires being bigger than 4Runners. Unless your wife's Corolla has a 6" lift on it. ![]()

Two months after I purchased it, I ditched the small tires and wheels and installed a set of 265/75s, mounted on 16" oem toy wheels. I did not do this for off road ability, but strictly for aesthetic purposes. Yeah, the mpgs are a little better with the 225s, but if he's buying an SUV, then gas is not his primary concern. RETRO, throw you a set of 265/70s (31s) or a set of 265/75s (32s), and you'll be good. (FYI, 265/75 is the largest you can go w/o a lift.)

Well, I was only trying to look through a "father's eye" in keeping the car stock and safe as possible.
Why not just let your son worry about how bad it looks? Being 16 and having no money, I'd think he'd want something cheaper to operate. Then you can use all that money you would've spent on that 4Runner on your own rig! But if you must upgrade, might I suggest going with 245/75/16? They are cheaper and many many many GMC 1500/2500 owners are getting rid of them (they come stock) in favor of bigger tires. I've seen tons of them for ~$200 or cheaper on craigslist (most have less than 1000 miles). Also, my wife's 05 Corolla has 205/60/15 tires. Nowhere near the 225/75/15.
