2000 4Runner Transmission Rebuild..

I just had my 2000 4runner SR5 3.4 Auto Transmission rebuilt for $2,100. I brought it to a local mechanic who has done some work for me before, however they send it out to a local Transmission shop that they use.

I was wondering if anyone can explain just what a transmission rebuild entails? What is replaced, and what is 'rebuilt'? For example, are shift solenoids replaced, whether they are good or not, etc...?

Thanks! Any input would be appreciated....

When I had mine done they replaced the paper and rubber parts, gaskets, seals, friction clutch and steel plates, etc., etc. Just curious, what was their turnaround time?

You should get a tranny cooler now to protect your 2.1k investment

I brought it in on Tuesday morning and got it back by 5PM Friday. Seems like they did a good job...

The transmission cooler sounds like a good idea. Any recommendations?

Those are the questions you should ask before selecting a tranny shop. At the very least ask them that after they are done. No one here can tell you what they did. Some will just go in and replace what is broken and they may even use salvaged parts. Some will use a master rebuild kit and replace all the wear items with new parts. A good shop will put in new solenoids. And you may find places that do anything in between. Does your receit show what parts they used?
