I have a 2000 SR5 with 88k on it. I bought it used and it runs fine. however, once it's been driven several miles and gotten good and hot, the vehicle jerks like it's not down in 1st gear and catches hard when taking off. It's almost like the thing is stuck in second and when you give it gas at a light, it CLUNKS down in first and jerks the truck.

I have found that if I manually shift the trans to L it makes no difference. I have also put it in neutral or even reverse and then back into D and it does the same thing.

I found a thread about some driveline issues being resolved by applying lube to the u-joints and sline on the driveshaft but it made no difference.

What is weird is when you drive it for a good long while, when you slow down and let off the gas, you feel it downshift with a clunk in every gear. I thought about having the trans flushed and replace the filter and gasket myself but dont really want to fool with it if I dont have to.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hey man, I had a similar problem with my 2000 Limited with about 88K on it as well. Mine was misfiring in cylinder three and so I had the plugs and wires replaced and I haven't had any problems with it since then. Not sure if the same thing is going on with yours but maybe that helps..

I agree.. I have heard of misfires causing your symptoms also.
I would attack the cheapest part first and see if it helps. New OEM plugs.. easy to do by yourself and cheap. You might verify this with a code scanner first. If plugs don't do it, or if you get a code regarding your TCM or something, come back and post results.

Wow, I would have never thought of that but now it makes perfect sense. When the jerking happens on decel, I noticed the rpm guage drops and comes back up and it also seems to be worse when you have the a/c on.

I have a code reader but never had an engine light go off...

Ya my check engine light eventually came on, I noticed the problem before it went off so I took it by Autozone and they hooked it up to the code reader. It was a pretty simple fix.

I've got a 1999 SR5 V6 Sport and it does something similar periodically, but I find that by feathering the brake I can avoid it. An example of when it might clunk would be sitting at idle at a traffic light and then quickly taking my foot off the brake to move forward a couple of feet. If I take my foot off slowly, it's much less likely to make the clunk.

Does this make sense? If so, does it sound similar to what you've experienced? I don't get the impression mine has anything to do with a misfire, either, because I just had all the plugs and wires replaced about 2,000 miles ago.

I think mine does something very similar to that. When sitting at a red light with the break engaged, the car idles very oddly. It bounces up and down. The car shakes a bit when they dance up.

It sounds like you just need to grease your slip yoke.

Thanks for the tip. I've found some writeups on lubing the driveshaft and I'm going to take care of that this weekend. I'll follow up and let you know if that takes care of it.

Well, I changed the plugs and wires and it still does the same thing. I still have never got an engine light.

Any other suggestions?
