#2 idler pulley (timing belt) nightmare. - UPDATED !

My truck sits in my garage this morning while we have our first snow of the season. My commute today was in my 85 F150 2WD with a very torquey 351 Windsor that hates idling

Anyway, got the new water pump in with no probs and then tried to remove the bolts holding the #2 idler (bearings sound shot when you spin it). I have read thread where folks get at them without removing the timing cover behind the camshaft sprockets. Not sure how they did it as a hard fuel line goes right over the top of both bolts on my truck , not to mention, I cannot seem to be able to wiggle a socket in past the main loom.

So, any suggestions ?

I tried for 90 mins to get the cam sprockets off and I have the SST and it just bent the pins on the SST !! Finally, the threads holding the pins on the SST stripped :cry:

I tried putting sockets on the heads of the small bolts holding the timing cover to hold the sprocket but they just fell off under pressure (this is a tip I read here)

So, my options are (and I have to have the truck back on the road Tues).

1. Fab a better SST and use an impact wrench on the cam sprocket nut

2. Repair current SST (which I borrowed) and try again

3. Leave #2 idler inplace with a new belt ... don't like this option

4. Try and move the hard fuel line aside (it has a fixed union very close to one bolt) and work down from the top.

Anyone got any words of wisdom ???

Chickenlover, great pics. Did you have to bend the hard fuel line seen in your pics that sits right above the Left side bolt that was so much fun to remove ?

check this out



i took the fuel rail bolt off (red arrow) then tweeked it over just a fuz what you see in the pic was all it took to fit the socket in from behind

for the rest of my pics (without any sort of writeup ... its comming)

note takeing them out was the easy part, palaceing them back IN! thats another story. Youll need a telescopeing magnet or a big magnet on your extenstion so you can hold on to the bolt as you drop it in from the top else youll be fishing for them on top of the lower pelnum. (ask me how i know)

Thanks.....

I was just worried about splitting that fuel union as the banjo washers are supposed not to be re-usable and I do not have on in hand.

I did the bend it out of the way style 120,000 miles ago. I'll probably do it again.

The ChickenLover tip worked a treat.

Also, I would recommend a 12mm flex socket
