1st gen. fuel economy?

I was checking out the link below and read that the '85 model actually gets pretty good milage. Is this acurate for a stock 4Runner?

Maybe when it was new. I'm averaging just under 20mpg with mostly city. I have measured as much as 32mpg highway but it was all downhill

On the highway I am getting around 21 MPG and 19-20 in the city.
Gas mileage was a bit better for me before all the modifications, but it really hasnt gotten crappy.
I've have a friend with a first gen also and he is getting 22MPG on the highway.

i consistantly get 20-22 in my '89 with a 50/50 highway/city driving. my truck is geard for 225's but i have 31"s on it.

contrary to other's beliefs in the 3.0, i get about 20 in my '90 with 50/50 highway/city driving, and i have even gotten 24-26 on road trips with cruise control.

That's not far off the mark and you might be able to get it up there with a tune up. Replaceing the o2 sensor helped my milage a lot, about 2 mpg. It cost me $150 but it was easy to install and it has prabably half paid for it's self already.

When I had 4.11 gears and 33x12.50's i got 16-17, then i put in 4.88's and I got 18, a week ago I got a k&N intake and flowmaster 40 and now I get about 19.5

Hopefully today I will be putting on a free flow cat and Thorley header. I'll post when I get results. I'm also thinking of the MSD offroad ignition on the future.

How do you tell if your O2 sensor is bad???
