The camshaft position sensor (P0340) tested within range around 1100 Ohms. I think the range is 835-1400 Ohms, but I see lots of misprints in the FSMs on that spec.

I've already swapped out the A/F sensor (P1135)

I think I found the problem, I had a loose ground on the intake/supercharger, the one that comes off the diagnostics plug thingy. I tighten it up and reset the ECU and it seems to be back to normal now

I'm always amazed how much trouble a loose ground can cause. Hope the easy fix solves the issue permanently.

Yep, I was surprised that one ground was so important. I have a redundant intake ground from the intake to the firewall but I think this one grounds the diagnostic plug to the intake. It was my fault too, I had loosen it when I moved the diagnostic plug out of the way while changing the spark plugs. I forgot to re-torque it causing all this headache myself. Guess I'm getting oldtimers LOL.

Its running fine now, problem solved.

Can you list all the grounds in the engine compartment so I can make sure not to miss one?

Battery to wheel well
Diagnostic box to upper intake
Passenger side rear of head to firewall

What am I missing?

There is also one from the engine block near the oil filter to something (might be the battery harness IIRC).

new to me 1998 4runner with the same problems, low idle in d or r not in p or n. it makes a little hiccup from idle to rev up and if i press the pedal i will respond poorly and late but then it runs great.also noticed a big vacuum sound that i cant find yet.seems to be a plague because a lot of friends here are suffering the same. hope some concrete solution can be found.

First off sounds like this truck has the wrong or old spark plugs in it. or maybe a sensor, MAP, TPS, O2.

For the vacuum try using a can of starter fluid and spraying in the engine compartment to see if the engine accelerates. Doing this in small spurts will give you the general location of said leak/leaks.

replaced today spark plugs and fuel filter damn it was really dirty!!!!!
found one vaccum leak because of missing screw in the intake
while under the truck i inspected the O2 sensor connnection and found that it has 2 of them upstream and downstream.
cel lit up today but i dont have a scanner tool so i disconnect the battery and its gone for now.
intake is clean, pcv is clean plug wires are ok with the right ohms reading, grounds are ok.
still idling low but steady and the hiccup still there.
im going to order the 2 O2 sensors becuase is time to replace the oem ones maybe are worns just in case, and test the injectors to see if one is stuck open or bad,the pump stills flowing endlessly before starting the engine it is suposed to prime and shut down also im going to check the fuel pump relay, let see whats happens next!!!!

i was looking for a scan tool in ebay and found that there are some cheap readers that maybe can do the work.
heres the link
