Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and somewhat new to cars. So forgive me if anything I ask about is generic knowledge or somewhat stupid. I'd like to know what exactly I need to look for in a muffler if I want a deep, loud but not annoying noise. I was looking at flowmaster 40 series and a borla, but the Borla is expensive compared to other mufflers. The biggest problem is, I don't know the dimensions I need to get. I know either 2.25 center in, offset out or 2.5 but what length muffler and all of that do I need? I don't want to have to buy extra pipe or modify the exhaust too much at all. I just want an easy installation. What about Thrush? Which muffler do you guys recommend for the 3.4L V6?

(I got a Thrush but it was the wrong size btw.) So sizing help is definitely needed.

It wont ever be deep like a V8, it will always sound raspy or sort of higher pitched. I just replaced the cat and everything back from there with a bosal system. Its a stock replacement, very easy to put on.I got the entire setup from www.rockauto.com

It's usually a good idea with a new cat-back system to up the piping 1/4 in larger in diameter. You can still keep the stock piping but may not be claiming the full HP/MPG gains that it has to offer.

Do you own a tape measure? the easiest way to know what length is to go measure what's on your truck. just saying.

for the in/out diameter, you need to decide what you're doing wit the rest of the exhaust. if keeping it stock, it would make most sense to stay the same size, or you'll either need adapters or new pipe. of course, ideally you would do a full exhaust but that is more expensive.

I would personally choose something like a turbo muffler, which is more like an oversized glasspack with way more insulation. The reason why I'd say go with turbo muffler is because of the straight-through design where you can see right through the center, which will technically flow much better than the Flowmaster "style" rectangle mufflers - which are all diverted/baffled design, which inherently effects flow and sound. you may have to do some slight tailpipe mods to deal with the linear design, but the benefit would outweigh the inconvenience IMO. Turbo muffler from Magnaflow or other brand will likely be significantly cheaper than a flowmaster branded muffler. Check out YouTube vids of tacomas with turbo muffler and compare to flowmaster

I replaced mine with one of the high flow systems. Big mistake.

Now my 4runner sounds like one of those Honda Civics owned by the punks in the movie, Gran Torino.

I will be scrapping the high flow and buying a stock system. Stick with factory parts.
