1999 4runner Won't Start
Hey Guys and Gals,
Just bought my first 4runner last week and having some issues. It ran amazing for the first week but now I'm having two issues specifically and I'm not sure if they are related or separate.
1. So the key won't turn in the ignition sometimes. I've read in a few place on this site and others that this has something to do with the ignition column. Usually, I just have to take the key out and put it back in a few times and giggle about for it to start. Any suggestions with this?
2. Sometimes the 4runner just won't start. I'll turn the key, everything in the dash, the A/C, radio, antenna motor, etc will come on but she won't start. Engine isn't turning, I don't hear the starter clicking, just nothing as if I had a dead battery. This started yesterday and I just tried a few times to turn the key until it finally started. When the she does start, there aren't any issues; no delay in starting, no weird noises, pretty normal. Any ideas?
So lastly, are these related issues or is it just coincidence that they both started happening at the same time?
Thanks.

It sounds like key/ignition issues to me. Like your ignition lock is not turning all the way until electrical contacts for the starter is made. Just a guess.
Stick or automatic? My 1999 4runner has a manual clutch, and I have to 100% depress the clutch to get it to start. The problem is the switch on the clutch lever, which is non adjustable. If that switch doesn't close, no starter action. I need to get under there and fiddle with it and get it working. Or just bypass it.

If it is, you can fix it for about 25 cents. I had to do this when I installed a new thicker carpet in my 5-speed runner. Just get a plastic stick on bumper or equipment foot, and attach it to the bracket where the pedal switch plunger post makes contact. Voilá!
But even if the OP is an auto, you bring up a good point. The park/neutral switch on the autos is a possible fail point as well for this symptom set. I suggest the OP try starting in neutral instead of park, next time he has trouble. If that gets it going, he'll know where to look..
