1998 4Runner: Want to understand stock ECU timing operation
Good day,
I would like to understand how the stock ECU in a 1998 Toyota 4Runner operates relating to ignition timing. My specific questions are:
• Does the ECU use a knock sensor?
o If so does it pull timing if knock is detected?
o What RPM does it start to work?
• If I switch from 93 to 100 octane fuel, how long does it take the ECU to add back timing?
o Are there any tricks to get the ECU to adjust to better fuel more quickly?
Also, if anyone is running engine management that can control ignition advance and retard, please post a reply with the details.

The ECU will try to advance timing as far as it can above 3000rpm immediately to a certain point (I'm not sure what the max timing advance is) provided the knock sensors allow it to do so. It is a dynamic process as Gadget said and it will advance instantly so no "tricks" are needed.
