1998 4R Manual Transmission help needed

hey all.

im gonna go ahead and say that i dont know much about manual transmissions, so i need some help. i installed a 1" BL on my 98 last weekend, and since then i've been noticing a weird vibration in 2nd gear, as if its not all the way in gear (kind of a subtle grinding). i read about it some on YT and roger browns site, and still am not sure. i took the boots and stuff off today to see if anything was preventing the stick from fully engaging 2nd (and possibly 4th and R). i drove it around the block with the boots off and it was perfectly smooth, so i'm pretty sure that i need to trim parts of the boot, i just dont know where.

heres a pic with the boots removed, drove smooth (i had the shift knob on of course)

heres a pic of a rubber layer that goes under the boots. this may be in the way a little when in 2, 4, R, but not so much that it would force the stick out of gear.

heres a pic with the boots on, in N

boots on, in 2 or 4. it looks like its the boot almost pulls the stick back to N.

if yall could help me out by telling me where to trim, or editing the pics with lines on where to trim, that'd be great! thanks!

That's strange. My 1" BL only made the 2, 4, R shift different - not bad per se. I agree, drop Roger a line. He will be glad to help you.

See the installation instuctions:
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/...l#ManualTranny

Trim any sheet metal that is in the way, or flip the inner runner boot inside out or upside down, or move the base plate fwd/back a little or or bend the shift levers.

So in your case, if the rear most positions are problematic, trim the back side of the opening for the tranny lever, or move the whole base plate back 1/2" or so (i.e. drill some new mounting holes in it), or flip/invert the heavy rubber boots as noted. Or you could put in a short throw kit for the tranny, cost ~$200 or so from B&M.

Yep, every vehicle is different and every situation is different. Just need to figure out what and where things are binding and then do something to fix that. Looks like you have a situation where the shifter hole is not lined up directly over the shifter in the tranny. I had a similar case in my '85, but it was offset too far to one side, so I had trouble with the t-case lever in 4L.
