1998 4 Runner LTD- 4 wheel drive problem

I am new to this forum and I love all Forums. I used to use Volvo, Nissan, BMW when I had these cars. Now it is a 4runner. My problem is that I can not get the 4x4 engaged. when I switch it on the fwd drive does not seem to be on. Is it an electrical problem (switch) or is it a mechanical problem. I don't feel anything when the switch is on 4x4.
Your help is appretiated.

Shahe

Do you have the push button 4x4 like most limiteds?

Does the dash light come on solid?

yes it is push botton and the light is on. Then I found out that it the road condition switch. My wife had changed it and the FWD was not engaging when it was off.

I think he mean't the conditions of the road changed.

I had a similar problem when I first got my 97 Limited. I could hear the 4WD engaging the frot drive shaft, but the front wheels won't lock. Easy fix that worked for me was to engage 4WD while reversing. For me, I heard a clunk when I reversed and 4WD has been working ever since.

If your still having problems, check your 4WD Shift Selector Sensor, sometimes it gets dirty because 4WD is never used. Make sure to engage the 4WD at least once a month to keep things lubricated and in working order.

are you sure the 4wd isnt working?

when you say fwd is not engaged, youre meaning the front wheels are not engaged in addition to the rears, i assume... well how do you know this? have you seen them not rotate when stuck or do you just not feel anything?

find the electrical connector plug under the driver's side by the differential and unplug it. Clean the contacts and replug it and see if that works. It did for me.
