1997 4runner Exhaust Question

1997 4runner Exhaust Question
About 3 years ago, we got a Magnaflow exhaust system put on the runner. It works really well, sounds cool, and adds a tiny performance boost too. Neat.
Since then, I've spent quite a bit of money installing a new stereo in the car. New speakers, alpine head unit, subwoofer, etc. Now that I have the new stereo, the fact that the car is so loud is a bit of a bummer. It definitely drowns out the stereo quite a bit.
I've thought about having a stock toyota exhaust system put back on, but I don't necessarily want to go that way. If there is a better way to go, I have yet to find it.
Basically I'm just looking for a quiet exhaust system at this point. I don't mind a little noise, but not too much to where it will seriously drown out my new stereo.
Any suggestions?

Well, i wouldn't say it's quiet, but my jardine system can be loud when you want it, and be quiet too. It's a great exhaust system, if you know "how to drive it" if that makes sense. Im sure it's this way for most exhaust systems, just depends on how you drive it.

What about trying to block the noise rather than dumping the exhaust? I would try some sound deadening material on the inside sheet metal with some closed cell foam and maybe some heavier carpet padding. It would be a big job to do the whole truck, but I would guess you would hear less of the exhaust and more of the system.

I really like mine. 18" Magnaflow with a custom bullet straight-through resonator (long, can be reversed to make it louder). I know it's out out there when I want it to be, but it doesn't bother me inside the truck at all.
I say go to a good local exhaust shop and ask them for advice as well.

Elton is on the right track.
Go longer. I have the 5x11x28" Magnaflow polished stainless steel muffler with 2.5" mandrel bent pipes. It sounds just a bit louder than stock. At idle, you can barely hear it. Still has the benefits of straight through design, stainless steel housing & core.

$100 bucks on ebay. Free UPS ground.
