1997 4Runner / brake and steering vibration
1997 4runner / 188K / original clutch/
I keep getting brake chatter time and time again. The last overhaul was complete with new calipers/rotors/pads/brake lines/ & fluid. now I'm getting the chatter again. What Up????
I also get vibration on the highway at speeds around 70-75mph.
I have been told that my factory rims may have a very slight woble. But these are the factory rims and normal size tires. I watched the guys spin and balance them and they showed me where the rim was not perfectly straight by holding a fixed object (i think it was screw driver) when it was on the balancer.
Any ideas on why my front brakes keep getting brake chatter are welcome.
Thanks,
Andy

In the steering wheel, in the seat, or both?
I would also go after the 70-75MPH vibration first, then tackle the brakes if it's still there as already mentioned. There are a couple ways you can troubleshoot this:
1. Try to "move" the vibration around by swapping wheels/tires front to back.
2. Temporarily swap wheels/tires with a friend and see what happens.
Narrow it down to the bad wheel(s)/tire(s) assuming that's the issue, fix the problem, and move on to the brakes.

I feel the vibration / "jiggily" vibration in the steering wheel and in the seat. the steering wheel does a quick pulsing back and forth motion and then with the seat you just feel it. It is subtle but annoying.
How would I fix the rim? Other than buying new ones.

In your seat indicates there is an issue with the balance of one or more of the rear wheels/tires.
One more thing you might want to try is get up 80MPH, then take it out of gear and coast past 75 and 70MPH. Is the vibration still there?
Where did you buy the tires?
