1996 Tacoma, LSD?
My friend insists that my 96 taco 4x4 has limited slip, im not taking it wheeling until its finished so my offroad use has been minimal, and i havent been able to find out.
From what i understand it doesnt, but he bet me 5$ that it does
anyone know?

I'm taking a educated stab here.....
I don't think any Toyota came with a LSD (cept for the XRunners, but they are 2WD lol) . They either had E-Lockers or nothing?

The taco is an 8.4 diff with different bolt patterns than the 4runners v6/turbo diff.

Back to the original question ...
From 1995.5 through 2004 no Tacoma ever came from the factory with a limited slip differential (LSD).
The LSD available with the TRD Sport Package (and standard on X-Runners) starting with the 2005 model year marked the first point at which Tacomas got LSD's from the factory.
During the earlier period (through 2004) a TRD LSD could be dealer-installed as an accessory at point of sale (as opposed to a factory option). Some people confuse factory standard / optional equipment with dealer-installed accessories.

One way to test for an LSD is to raise the rear end and rotate the wheels. If the wheels rotate in the same direction, it has an LSD. If they rotate opposite one another, it's an open diff.

it looks to be a direct swap/bolt in.
i was just wondering if there was anyone has personal experience from someone that has done this swap in there truck, maybe there is some info that isn't provided on that website, maybe you have to shave the housing due to clearance issues, or maybe you need to swap pinion flanges so that your driveshaft works, or axel problems.

I hate to sound like an uptight old guy, but I don't really think it's safe to use LSD in your Tacoma.
I have enough trouble keeping my '96 betwixt the ditches during the occasional flashback to think it's a good idea to drive at all with LSD.
Sorry, I couldn't resist....one of the funnier thread titles I've seen on the 'net. Imagine all the hippies in Washinton State who keep finding this thread on the google.
Dropping an LSD in your rear end - google says it's been done before: There are some weird people out there.
Title aside, it's a good topic. Been wanting to put either an e-locker or limited slip in mine. Very interested to learn about the options.
