Considering this setup: (Suggestions or Comments?)
1.) LCE 4-1 Header
2.) LCE EFI Pro Cam or ToyotaPerformance EFI Pro Cam (Suggestions on which one?)
3.) Free Flow Cat (Do these make that much of a difference over the stock cats?)
4.) Open Filter Intake (Got it.)

LCE has a 22RE Pro Cam and Pro Cam Offset, what's the difference? Thanks.

I would suggest either send your head to engnbldr to have it redone with oversized valves and the 270 cam, that is what i did and it was only $400 aprox. Or go with the TCR EFI power package for $900 you get a whole lot. And it will complament what you have now.

I would like to see what your times are now and when you get this done.

that's what i've always thought, TCR just sells LC stuff. sounds like you're off to a good start...the cam will make a big difference.

engnbldr's heads are a good setup, it's a new generation casting, and they can be ordered with oversized valves and some port work done for $620...not a bad deal considering it's a BRAND NEW head.

They just rebuilt mine and it was $350 W/O the cam. They are really good they have 20-30years of experiance and know what they are talking about. He stumped a buddy of mine who is a master mech and blew him out of the water with his knowledge of heads.

OK, so the LCE Header and LCE Pro Cam sounds good? What goes into installing a cam, or should I say how much would it cost? Thanks.

when installing a cam it's best to do your head gasket at the same time, as the head bolts also hold down the rocker assembly

So I should purchase a new head gasket as well? Would the LCE 22R OEM Head Gasket work for my 22RE? I won't be installing the cam myself, I'll probably have to take it to a shop or Toyota dealership.

yep, definitely a good idea to replace the head gasket. it's not all that hard of a job, it's mostly just getting everything out of the way. i'd trust anything LC sells

Thanks, any idea on how much it will cost to get a shop to install the camshaft? How much of a difference - performance wise - do you think it will make?

Don't bother with the 22R/RE, just do the 7M-GTE Supra swap and you WILL be fast. Can you say stock LS1 territory? LOL!

Actually, I'm suprised nobody here has G-tech'ed their 4cyl truck yet.

I wouldn't under estimate a good running 22R/RE in a lightweight '84-'88 2wd Hilux. With my meager mods and rather high mileage, I have no problem beating alot of newer vehicles from a stoplight. 4cyl S10's, older Civic's, 4cyl Ranger's and the list goes on. I also can give the 150hp DOHC 2RZ-FE Tacoma's a pretty good run too.LOL!

IMO, I'd go with the Thorley header. The tri-Y design will help increase low to mid rpm TQ. This is what you need most with these trucks because the 22R/RE is a low to mid rpm TQ motor. Get a late style 22RE intake plenum. I believe it was around the '94MY or so that Toyota redesigned the 22RE plenum for more flow. Ditch the mechanical fan and get an electric one for less parasitic drag on the engine. I think you can also tweak the AFM for more airflow as well. Be careful with the cam selection though. The 22RE is a slightly different animal than the 22R. A cam that may work good on a 22R may not work as well on a 22RE.

If I were you, I'd do the header and catback exhaust first. This alone will make the most noticeable difference in how your truck runs. After that, then I'd do the air intake modifications like a K&N/Amsoil filter with a DIY cold-air-induction setup. You'll be so pleased with how the truck runs after that, you won't even want the "aftermarket" cam.

I've been looking for an electrical fan to replace the mechanical one, does anyone know of one? Thanks.

My 04 3.4l is just about adequate for keeping up with traffic, both of my 22RE's were uber slow... The Subaru on the other hand... not so slow, but it is a hand full to steer when all 4 tires start spinning on a 1-2 shift.

Well....I spent the $$$ and got the Flex-a-lite 165 thermostatically adjustable electric fan. It's basically a bolt in job for the fan. The fan is specifically made for the 22R/RE engines. You get all the connectors, wiring and directions to hook it up as well.

The nice thing about the adjustable fan is that my engine is always "crisp" in throttle response. With the old mechanical fan setup, my truck use to get kinda "spongy" when the outside temps got warm enough or if the engine was under a high load for long period of time. I used to hate that. The adjustable electric fan has cured that problem.

You can also do the "junkyard" Taurus electric fan mod to save $$$, but then you'd have a F*rd part on your Yota. Yuck! LOL! Also, I don't think the Taurus fan is adjustable like the Flexalite 165. I've been running the FAL 165 for almost 2-years now without a single problem.

Back to the subject of 1/4 mile times... Get yourself a GTech Pro off of ebay to get a close estimate of what it would run at the track. I paid 40 bucks for mine with shipping. The miles per hour usually reads 3 to 5 miles per hour faster but the times are 1 or 2 tenths off which is pretty dang good.

How loud is the fan when it's on? Thanks.

Wow, thanks for telling me about the GTech Pro. Looks pretty cool and I hope it'll work well. So it just plugs into the cigarette lighter? How does that work? Thanks for the post, I'll be buying one ASAP.

Jonathan,

I'd say the FAL 165 fan is somewhat loud if your standing near the engine compartment outside. Inside the cab with the windows shut, you can barely hear it.

When I start my truck, for the first few seconds of driving the fan is really loud, but then it cuts off (fan clutch?) and just spins at a slower speed no matter what RPM I'm at. It continues to stay that way until I turn the engine off. I like it because I can't even hear it. I would like to get an electric fan to free up some HP but I need it to be as quiet (if not more) than the stock one.

Yeah, just plugs right in the cig lighter then you level the GTech Pro watching the numbers on the display... It'll pop up with a flashing -GO- when it's ready then you umm, go

Sounds simple enough, I'm definitely going to check it out. For 45 bucks, you can't lose!

Sorry but both the evo and the skyline will ass rape the bimmer without any KY jelley including the M5 on the twisties and the 1/4.... They will do the same to ANY vehicle that does not have AWD in stock form.

But that is not the point, to get our trucks "fast" we'd need at least 400bhp before they could do anything....

you don't need 400hp to make a 2wd toyota fast. with the way an '84-88 truck handles, and say, a 250hp 22RT(E?) i could outhandle and outrun 90% of anything out there.

I said that thinking of a 4000-4500lb 4runner, not a 3200lb truck.
