Did it run good before the tune up?? Or was the tune up to fix the running problem? What plugs did you use? Did you short the diagnostic plug to set the timing? Have you checked compression?
Sorry, just lots of questions. My son has an 85 22RE also.

The tune up was to fix the problems and i used a general use automotive plug that was specified to fit in the make and model. I have no reset any timing...all i have done is to losen the distributor and twist it as it would to see if it sounded any better advanced or slowed up. How do i short the diagnostic plug and what will it do?>

By twisting the distributor you just changed your timing. The diagnostic plug is on the drivers fender well. It will have two wires going to it, short it out and reset your timing

There is usually 2 rubber gommets on the inside of the drivers fender (between the AFM and the coil)
The smaller one is the diagnostic plug (I think they are green) Pull it out of the grommet, install a jumper wire (cotter pin, paperclip), set the timing (5 deg IIRC), remove jumper. The jumper dis-ables the computer controlled timing. You are setting the base timing.
