16"brakes to 15"

Alright, i've dug through over 8 pages in my search and haven't found any answers, so sorry if this has been covered in the past.

My new to me 98 (2.7 5spd.)needs new front brakes and the current tires suck in the snow. I have a heavily modified 02 pathfinder i've put away for winter. For the pathfinder i have a couple of sets (10 tires) of 6x5.5x15" I'd like to use, but they won't fit over my Toys rotors/calipers (factory 16"wheel option). Sooo, i'd rather not grind the calipers, seems precarious, anyone ever downsize rotor/calipers back to 15's? Am i crazy? Anyone have a better suggestion, aside for investing in 16" wheels and tires? The 15" rims and tires are nearly new.

Thanks for any input.

Pete

You really don't have any options. Either sell the 15's and get new 16's, or get new brakes. I'm sure there are tons of people that's willing to swap brakes with you. Post your location and maybe someone will chime in.

I personally would not switch to the smaller brake package. My old 98' 4Runner (16inch wheels) used the larger 12.5in brake Rotors and never had a problem. My newer 2000 4Runner (15inch wheels) has the smaller 11.7in brakes and I've had both rotors warp twice. Ended up spending a lot a money on slotted rotors and ceremic pads. A great place that I've gotten rims is 4WheelParts.com. All Rims are on sale right now. Good luck.

Sorry to say that all the money you spent on the slotted rotors got you no benefits. The ceramic pads were helpful, but you'd have been better going with good solid blank rotors. Autozone has 2 yr warranty on their rotors.

Not only do you need to swap the calipers, you need to swap out the spindles as well. I know they are different sizes between 15" and 16".

However...I have never heard of anyone just swapping the calipers themselves...they may line up, but, I am guessing they wont since Toyota went out of their way and made two sizes of spindle assemblies.

Grinding may work, but, I hear you... I don't know if I'd personally do it either.

I think you would be wasting good money trying to modify the 4runner to use the wheels off your pathfinder. You have 16" wheels on your 4runner, do two things, first just buy a nice set of all terrain tires for the 4runner, then do the Tundra brake upgrade. Check out my write up on this mod. After you do the upgrade you will be very happy you did. I used OEM parts out of a wrecking yard that were in excellent condidtion and my cost to do the brake upgrade was only around $80. Depending on the year and the yard you get the parts from is the only real difference in cost and the Tundra calipers bolt right up to your 4runner. Read my write up here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/0...runner-146160/

Hmm. Thanks for the candid answers guys, that's what i needed to hear. I wish i had the 4runner sooner, it would have made a much better offroad platform vehicle than the unibody pathfinder. My hopes were to save $500 on new tires since i had nearly new ones that will be sitting around all winter at least.
I'll look into the Tundra mod in the future though, i love cheap and effective projects, i've gotta start saving for Tires/brakes/rotors now lol.
Goodnight.
Pete
