15's on an 01?

Tires that came with my truck are getting close to being bald. Gonna replace them with a decent A/T or M/T.

Prices for tires on 16's are ridiculous. A 31x10.5x16 BFG A/T is more expensive than my 35x12.50x15's BFG muds!! It'll cost less to get some cheap 15" black steelies and 31's then to buy them with 16" rims.

My question is will a 15x8 fit on 01 Taco brakes w/o grinding the calipers?

Some will, some will not. It depends entirely upon the design of the wheels. There are a few known good wheels and you can find that list on the TTORA board, for anything else, you will need to test fit a wheel to make sure before you buy.

It is a far better idea to find wheels that fit in the first place, rather than grinding your calipers.

Here's a shot of 15x8 wheels on my 2001, when it was IFS. They are Allied "Daytona", Series 51 wheels in 15x8 with 3.75 backspacing. They are a perfect fit. I also understand the the US Wheels, series 84's work as well.

Are the brakes the same size on the 2001 taco as they are on the 4runner? My 4runner came with 16s but I want to go to 15s without having to change the brakes...I was wondering if it was possible.

I am certainly not an expert on the Runner's, but my understanding is that they are even more picky than the Tacoma's. Someone around here, (Smegal?) tried to put some Taco wheels on his Runner and they wouldn't fit

...and you still may be able to. But my advice would be to find some and MAKE SURE before you plug your Visa card into some online site with no returns Try on someone elses or find a tire store with them in stock and test fit one of the rims first.

I tried to go that route(getting 15"'s), but I was told by two different retailers that it wouldn't work due to the larger rotor/caliper size.

Retailers often have a rectal/cranial inversion going on. There are plenty of Tacomas and 4Runners around who have gone to 15" wheels. You just have to find a retailer who doesn't subscribe to rumors, who has done more than put one style of wheel on before deciding it wasn't possible and who will work with you to make you, the customer, happy

People still tell me that I can't run 15" rims on my rig... DOH!
