15 inch rims on 4runner?

I might be loseing my 1996 Taco to Toyota due to the frame rust issue. I have 15x8 aftermarkets on it and 31" BFG ATs that I would like to take off and put on my next vehicle. Will any newer 4runners accept the 15" rim? Thanks in advance!

You shouldn't have problems. I think the bolt pattern is still the same for tacoma's and 4Runners, the 6x5.5 bolt pattern. I ran 2006 tacoma rims on my 1991 4Runner and they fit with no problems.

If he is talking 96+ 4runner, you are incorrect. The 96+ 4Runners with the bigger brakes (ie 16" wheel package) will not accept 15" wheels on the front. They will hit the caliper.

All Toyota 4x4 trucks and 4Runners from 86-06 used the same 6 lug bolt pattern. They switched to lame-o 5 lug on the tundras in 07. The new Tacomas still use the oldschool bolt pattern.

You're right, I remember now the 2006 wheels I had were 16", I switched back to the 15" cause I think they look better.

So basically any Tacoma even if it came with 16's, will accept 15's with no clearence issues? And any 4runner with 16's will NOT accept 15's? Was there a big brake option in the 3rd gen 4runners or what? I am leaning towards a 2001+ Tacoma or a 96+ 4runner for future purchase btw. Thanks!

I have a question about this... Is what Black_Taco wrote correct? 've searched and found conflicting info...

I have a 2003 Tacoma Double Cab 4WD SR5 TRD with 16 inch rims and I'm going to sell my 1988 4Runner with an almost new set of 31" BFG ATKOs on 15" stock alloys rims.

Will the 15" rims off the 88 fit the 03 Tacoma?

I know that I could find this out for myself by pulling a front wheel from both and trying the 15s on the Taco, but I'm just trying to save myself some time/trouble for nothing if someone here happens to have already tried and found out they will not.

Regards. Toyotero.

The rear will fit, but the front will not. It will hit the caliper.

To answer some of the questions, yes the 3rd gens had a bigger brake option. 12.5" rotors and 11.6". Generally, 16" wheels came with the bigger brakes, but double check the calipers. It should be stamped with S13WE for the bigger brakes, iirc.

All 95.5 to 04 Tacomas CAN accept 15's if the backspacing is okay. Make sure the rims calipers clear before buying.

As a good rule of thumb, if it came with 16's, 15's are probably not going to fit. Especially crager steel wheels because the weld is so thick. The rears will usually work but the fronts will not.

Despite what the door sticker says...toyota offered MANY different packages available for the customer. My door says my truck should have 15's but I have the 6 spoke 16's. Not ALL 4Runner's with 16's have the larger brakes. A co-worker of mine witnessed two men in our compound (2500+ vehicles) remove the 16inch wheels off the written off 4Runner and switch them to a 1999 Tacoma that they were in and put the 15inch's wheels off the Tacoma back on the written-off 4runner :O. My co-worker (tow truck operator) thought for sure they were half-a$$ed on and the vehicle wouldnn't even roll.....but sure enough the 4Runner rolled into the auction yard no problem with 15's. So the only true way to know is to take the wheel off and have a look at the caliper and see how big it is. Unfortunately for me....I tried my friends factory 15's (power-coated black) with BRAND new BFG's T/A's on my truck but my brakes were too big!! He was charging me 500$ CAN for wheels/rims i'm now debating doing a swap to get the smaller caliper's to fit these NICE rims :sigh:

update:

I finally had time to try swapping the factory allow rims from my 1988 4Runner SR5 (15") to my 2003 Taco 4WD TRD (16").

This is the style of rim (not my photo)

The 15 inch rims fit with about 1/4" of clearance between the caliper and the rim. This is about the same amount of clearance as the 4Runner had with them.
