Thumbs up 10 minute 3rd gen fuel filter change!

For those of you that have been holding back for one reason or another - wait no longer! The fuel filter literally took me 10 minutes to replace - on my back, with no jack.

You will need a deep well 10mm socket or 10mm wrench, 14mm wrench, and a towel to "catch" the fuel that comes out. I also wore latex gloves to keep the gas smell off me (I hate that smell).

That's it, piece of cake!

BTW: I am at 73.5K miles.

PS: I got my filter from TOR (Todd) here on the boards. He is a great guy to work with, and the shipping was fast!

Just do it!

Hmmmm...
I'm at 43K, I should probably wait at least another 22K before I even think about this.
But encouraging news all the same

Hmm, I thought someone was doing a write-up on this already.

Well, you cant miss it Rob. It is right under the drivers seat (under the vehicle of course).

I can take some pics for you if it is something you want to do.

This is probably a stupid question because I've never done a fuel filter change... I know it's just good routine maintenance, but is there a noticeable difference afterwards? Just curious.

No, I felt no difference. However, the fuel that I dumped out of the old filter was brown.

this is probably a stupid question but i was wondering if you had to bleed off any air out of the fuel line and if so how? i heard somewhere that the air bleeding procedure was the big hassle and that was why most people avoid it like the plague it seems that the beeding thing is merely a mith?
thanks

Just a myth on the 3rd gens. Just remove, catch excess with a towel, and replace with the new.

Hey '96- you're one of those lucky enough to live in a rust-free environment. For the rest of us schmoes, its going to take a bit longer- even with box-end wrenches I still came close to stripping the nuts on the filter, but a pair of vice grips saved my a$$.

It's the same on the Tacoma, easy as one two three, I prolly replace mine too often at 20k? but i figure it's cheap and if it helps my injectors then it's worth it

Yeah, good point. But I wouldnt exactly call it "lucky" to live here. Heck, I would much rather move back to Seattle at the sacrifice of a couple bolts and some bloody knuckles.

What would you rather have, a house in hell or a pesky fuel filter?

And it burns if you get it in your eyes too!!

For those talking about bleeding the fuel system to get the air out, I believe that is only with diesel engines. Air in the injectors of a diesel will be a MAJOR pain to get out usually....

On my 3.slow, I just turned it over after the swap. It took probably 15 seconds, then came roaring back to life.
