'04 4x4 Tacoma steering rack leak - from the guide
I've got sort of an oddball leak (at least it seems uncommon, after searching) from my steering rack.
It's not leaking at the TREs/boots but at the steering rack guide (that big round thing that faces towards the rear of the truck, looks like a big inverted hex nut with a lock ring.
Is that guide 'nut' supposed to seal up the rack (i.e. if you remove it under normal circumstances, would fluid come out?) or does this indicate an internal leak in the steering rack? Like I said, nothing at the TREs/boots and steering is still tight. Fluid level is OK, its not a big leak.
If I wipe it off and drive around town for a couple of weeks, it's still dry. If I drive offroad for a few miles, I get some dampness and maybe a drop or two just hanging on the rack - not even hitting the ground. And when I say "offroad", I mean dirt roads/logging roads, no boulders or rock climbing or anything like that.
Thoughts? Truck only had 56k on it, about 45k on this rack (original was replaced under warranty trying to chase down a clunk that turned out to be the steering shaft, not the rack).
Thanks!
