03 Nav system disabled while driving
I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to stop the Nav System from disabling certain (well most) features while you are driving. This is very annoying if you have a passenger that could be using the Nav System.
Thanks,
Scott

I have the alpine nav in my 02, and I had the guy cut the wire that disables it while your driving. Fixed the problem right away. take it to an audio shop, they should be able to cut the same wire for the factory set up.

Absolutely not!!! that is the worst idea ever-- well, not the worst idea if the shop refuses to touch the unit. I would never ever in a million years provide an avenue for someone to sue me or void the warranty at my shop. I guarantee that if the nav system is wired into the computer and speed sensor circuit and an inexperienced installer cuts it, the check engine light will go on, or the speedometer wont work or at the very least, mess up the nav system. Then you will have to go to the dealer to reset the code tripped by the computer and the warranty will be permanently voided for that piece of equipment. Keep in mind, what sfrolich suggested is completely illegal in all 50 states and carries a fine, not to mention its just dangerous to try to program a nav system while driving.
just trying to save you from a ticket or accident.

They must have passed new laws between my 2002 Acura and the 2003 4Runner since all features are available on my Acura.
Funny you mention accidents... my boss wrecked his brand new M3 while messing with the nav system. ouch!

There is a 16 wire harness on the NAV system. One of those sixteen wires is connected to your braking system, so that when you have your foot on the brake the nav screen comes on, and then when your moving and your foot is off the brake, the nav screen turns off. All you do is snip that one wire, and wrap both ends in electrical tape. Your cutting one wire on a wiring harness into the back of a nav computer, how would this cause a check engine light? If your dumb enough to take it to the dealer to do it, then you deserve the punishment your going to get. I took mine to a tweeter center, where I know the guy knows his ˟˟˟˟. He works on custom cars for Alpine. If he doesn't know something, he looks it up before he screws it up. If ever needed, all you would have to do is rejoin those two ends together again.
As far as safety, again if your dumb enough to be messing with the buttons while driving, then what can I say?!?!? But I find it very helpful to have the screen on all the time, it lets me know what intersections are coming up, distance, ETA, etc.
As far as the legality, the cop will write a ticket for the limo black tint, the red light camera deflector on the plates, lack of front liscence plate, non SAE approved tail lamps, and whole list of other ˟˟˟˟, before he writes the ticket for the nav screen being on.
Even if you do get pulled over, all you have to do is hit one key and screen turns off.
If your worried about warranties and legalities, then I guess your driving 55 mph, and carrying a map. either way good luck with it, maybe someone else will chirp in with a better solution then mine.
