I know some of you like myself are starting to get some miles on your new 4Runners. What type of maintenance are you planning for 15K miles?

So far I've done:

- Change oil and filter using M1
- Rotate tires
- Grease the drivetrain
- Visual inspect everything else

I don't fall under the extreme service condition and spend most of my miles on the highway. I don't see a need to change the diffs, transfer case, or transmission fluid yet. Do you think 30K miles is too long to wait for those services? I'm planning to change the oil/filter, air filter, rotate tires, and grease the drivetrain right now. What about you guy's?

I don't think it's to long, Toyota probably underrates their maintenance intervals to make up for the folks who take their trucks up to higher mileage.

Some of my friends flush their trans at 70k, and they run fine so.

Im undecided if Im gonna do anything at 15k usually like my past cars I just do/have everything done at 30k, depending on the weather I'll do it or take it to the Mobil Gas Station that is the only shop I trust.

I'm going to do the work myself but I don't know if it's worth doing now. I don't have a garage so I would like to do the work now before it gets too cold. That is if I decide to do the diffs and transfercase. Sometimes I think I'm too precautious when it comes to doing the maintenance.

What did you do with the Tacoma, the things to change at 15k are the diffs, trans, transfer case along with the stuff you already did or do.

A garage plays a big part in doing stuff cause I have made the mistake of changing my oil in the middle of the winter, 2 trips to autozone and 4 hours and I got the oil changed on the 4Runner for the 1s time

Alot of times I change the fluids and I feel like Im wasting them, new oil and grease is what keeps these thing like new and I like the idea of that but lets not go crazy

another thing to remember is where the select group of owners who take exceptional care of our cars, sure you got the people who get oil changes every 3-5k and the ones who take their cars into the dealers for the 15k,30k, 45k services no matter what but in reality when I ask people how they take care of their cars they don't have a clue but long as the car is shiny it's all good.

Most don't do anything till they have to.

My friend had a mint Acura Legend, 130k car looked like it rolled out of the showroom, it was nothin for him to spend $500 every month to get the car detailed, surprise surprise the engine ceased cause he for got to change the oil:pat:

I changed the diffs on my Tacoma at around 17K because I contaminated them driving through very high water. I didn't change them again until 60K and the fluid looked great. I also didn't change the transfercase until 60K. I didn't start getting religious with maintenance until a couple of years ago.

I'm just the opposite about having something look shiny and new. I don't give much thought about my paint as I do the motor and drivetrain.

Have you decided what your're going to do at 15K?

I think the only major thing people forget about when DIY is to lube the drivetrain. THere is that excellent thread about lubing the slip joint, for example. I think I skimmed the service manual and it mentioned regular lubing of components.
THat is something I would make sure to do especially on 4x4's.

But, I also think if you regularly change the main fluids every 5k and just drove it like you gave 2 cents about it, it will last a long time and be ok whenever you did decide to do a "major" maintainence interval.

What??? You mean we have to do maintenance?
I bought a Toyota so I wouldn't have to do that!

Seriously, I try to change my engine oil and air filter every 2500 miles (or every three weeks in my case), my transfer case, and spark plugs every year as well as my diffs. I generally grease my drive train once or twice a month. Flush my radiator once a year too.

I know, I'm going over the edge but I consider it "Quality Bonding Time".

I also put around 3 - 4k on my truck every month and I work in a place thats sand and dust covered 70% of the time.

I'll probably change the stuff at 15-20k depending on when I have time, Im not to concerned about the fluids Toyota builds quality vehicles so Im betting they use quality fluids so they should be fine, remember everything is underrated

I think every year and every vehicle I get more religious about maintenance, but I like the inside and outside to be lookin and runnin good.

Not that anyone cares but my neighbor uses reformulated oil in his 3rd Gen 4Runner looks like it just came out of someones engine

Sounds like I'm behind on my maintenance. Next month I'll have 30k on my 03 Runner and have not done anything except change the oil and air filter.

just realized you do 30-48k a year so your not an extremest when it comes to maintenance
