'02 Tacoma 3vzre no compression!?
So I jump in my 2.7L 4cyl. truck (145K mi) tonight, fire it up after not having run it all week. Quick rumble after start, then dead. Hmm....almost never fails to start. Been a while, lets try it again... crank ... what the ??? Sounds like no compression!!
The early panic begins. The first thing I think is busted timing belt. #$@&$ I know I asked if it had a chain or belt before I bought it (nightmares of a previous vehicle's broken timing belt and interference engine dancing in my head)! I'm thinking "That's just great!" Furious that I might have been lied to, and here I was after buying thinking "Great, no need to change the belt!" Too dark to see anything meaningful, so I go inside and off to the web.
Well, it appears my source was vindicated because my research seems to point at this motor being on a chain.
So why does this all leave me less than pleased about the possibly big problem ahead of me? I don't know if I'm dealing with an interference engine or not, but since its a chain I'm assuming it is...???
A little feedback from some of the pros here might be helpful (and definitely appreciated), because its going to be a long, expensive, and unhappy weekend for me. At least it didn't strand me on the road.
