01 SR5 T4R check engine and vsc off/trac idiot lights - resolved/warranty

First, thanks to everyone on YT who has helped this newbie with my many questions Second, thanks for everyone who has posted things/lessons learned regarding their rigs.

Yesterday afternoon, I was in the parking lot at work talking on my cell while the truck warmed up and ran for 5-6 min. as I was negotiating something and didn't want to plug in my headset. As I finished the call, I noticed that my Check Engine, VSC Off and VSC trac lights were now illuminated on my dash. I tried to trouble shoot, including engaging/disengaging 4wd on gravel, with no success.

I got home and checked YT, finding my problem. As my tools haven't gotten back from overseas yet (and since I am studying my a$$ off in Spanish training), I opted to go the dealer route. I took it in to a place my Cruiser had been before and advised them of the likely diagnosis I found, believing it to the the VSV valve.

Later this AM, I got a call from the dealer that my entire Charcoal Cannister assembly was leaking and required replacement, to the tune of $745!!!!!!!!! I was pretty pissed as my truck only has 50,100 mi and the warranty for the part in question was 3yr/36,000. I authorized the repair to proceed.

I then called Toyota Customer Relations at 800-331-4331 and spoke to them regarding the cannister not being covered by warranty at 50ish K miles. I also informed them that this is my 2nd Toyota and my Dad just test drove a Highlanger hybrid at my suggestion (and is planning to purchase). They gave me a case number and suggested I contact the Customer Relations Manager at the dealer. Every dealer has a CRM, who usually has other duties as well, like inventory manager.

I contacted the CRM and gave her the case #, she advised she would speak with the Service Manager and the Toyota Service Rep for their dealership. Long story longer, she later called me back and said that I would only have to pay for the labor, Toyota would provide me the part free as "Good Will." I still ended up paying $245, but that's a hell of lot better than $745.

For some Toyota corporate experts.... I am guessing that Toyota would rather not do a recall as I have seen a good number of posters with this same problem, I'd welcome your thoughts.

I hope this helps someone else, it shows that pushing the envelope on warranty issues with the dealer can help you. Hopes this helps someone else.

Be Safe,
DS
