'00 vs. '01
Fellas,
I'm thinking about picking up a SR5 4runner before I move out west and my price range puts me between an '00 and '01. I've read a bunch charting the differences between the two but I have some powertrain questions. First, I know the 4wd systems are different. Is there a clear winner between the two? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the one in the '01 is more of an AWD system (with VSC and traction control). Secondly, is it worth tracking down a '00 with the 5-spd? Or are the 4-spd autos pretty durable? I think that's pretty much it. I appreciate the help.

the 01 + 02s are 4wd, but have AWD capability. once you lock the center diff, the VSC turns off.
i like having all that computer junk. truth is, it's nice to have on road. but yes, if can be a hinderance off road. there's a way to wire up a switch that will disable VSC/TRAC/ABS in 2wd or 4wd, so that's a nice option.
i've had good luck with my 4sp auto, it's durable. some prefer the 5spd manuals tho. depends on what you like.

everything charles says here is what i think too... the auto tranny is very durable, unless you put a supercharger on it

from consumer reports(not 100%) i've heard more overall problems from the 01, which is why i got an 02. i'd go w/ the 00 which was my plan B. go manual if possible.

Good luck finding a 2000 manual. If you can, snatch it up. They are pretty rare. As others have said, the Auto is durable - as is the manual. It comes down to preference. In all honesty, for the weekend wheeler, the Auto is way more user friendly. The 5 speed is way more fun on the street though.

no links. i think it was a consumer reprts magazine.it was based on user reports, nothing directly from toyota and i cant remeber exactly where i saw it when i started shopping for mine. something related to number of times and length in the shop for repairs. maybe it was unreliable, but.... i got an 02 because of it. im sure there will be more responses about it.
maybe a poll for repairs etc. would show this.

Hey Lee, ya you're all over the place man. Thanks fellas for all of the advice. I think I'm going to keep looking for the 2000 5-speed. If you find one in or near VA, send it my way!

If you truly off road then you should also look for one with the rear locker which was deleted by '01 plus the '99s and most of the '00s have coils with one extra wind to 'em which equals almost an inch higher clearance.
