Yota.Jay's 1987 Build-Up thread

Well after reading a good bit of build threads here, I have found what I like and I guess what I would add for other users.

First, I'll start off with me. I am 17 years old(will be 18 monday). I have my ASE certification on the electronic side of cars/trucks. I know a little welding. I'm purchasing my first vehicle(rule in the house, if you want it go get it yourself).

I found a running 1987 Toyata 4x4 with a 22r (from what I've read/been told its the best). The owner is a good friend and has never given me and bs. He also carries a good rep. The total cost is $1000 and I had to spend $104 for a battery.

I don't have a big budget as these guys. So this maybe a low budget build. I can say one thing I've always wanted to know is price on certain parts and install time. I will give that in my thread. I have also learned that plenty of pictures are good.

If money wasn't option maybe Id swap the axle in the front, change the engine out, buy a new transmission, and other things. I can't do that.

So first things first

mechanical fuel pump replaced- Beck Arnley $37.51

I know it needs a sending unit to fix the fuel gauge problem.

Other then that the plans in the future is to fix the fender and spray paint it. I'll get plenty of pictures posted up as soon as I can

Total Cost = $1,141.51

here is the plan

Weber Carburetor :$260

I'm also wondering what's the maximum size tire I can install on the truck? I plan to do a 3" lift but not wanting to go to a low gear ratio.

Instead of me dropping the tank and risking the breakage of fuel lines; I purchased a Inline fuel filter which was $6. I don't have the money nor the time to fix as this is my daily driver.

I plan to go to three of my local junk yards and see if they have a replacement rear bumper. That one is falling off and rusted out. If I can find a hitch, I plan to buy that too.

All the fluids will be changed. Royal Purple 10W-30 Oil and filter was given too me so that will be my oil change. I plan to flush the Radiator fluid also along with the T Case and Diffs.

Im still trying to price and decide what color Id like the body to be. I feel like a green or maybe a blue would look really good.

Ill take more pictures and get more back to you on the way

Jay

Looks like a solid truck to work with. You can run 31s without issues, with a lift you should be able to runn 33s without any problems, but that is recommended to go with 4.88 gears or you will be driving a slug. I have not run 33s before so cant answer that with experince. I have driven a truck with 33s and 4.88 and it is about the same as a stock set up.

Doing a full color change is easy to with the exception of doing the engine bay. Doing the engine bay correctly is a real pain in the rear to do if you want to do it where it never shows it was ever any other color. I think green or blue would look great.

A little at a time and you can get this truck up and running in great shape. There are thousands of things you can do that will make a difference on these trucks that can be done on the cheap. While waiting for funds, there is always cleaning. Cleaning to me means cleaning sensors, electrical contacts, parts cleaning, getting the carbon out of everything, ventilation ...

Wecome to Yotatech and looking forward to your build.

With that being said ...I'd like to take the cab and the bed off. but that would require for me to take the engine...remove a bunch of things. I have a plan to take off the bed. Just need to find the bolt locations.

Main thing right now is to make drivable with AC and get the audio working. Once I get that done Im going to really start doing some mods. Right now Im reading reviews lift kits.

I bought some welding supplies today.

Welcome to the coolest Toy place on the planet. Looks like a cool truck to work with. I've got an 87' SR5 with a 22re, and I love my truck. 309,000 miles, and still kicking.

Your plan should work just fine. I did notice one thing. You mentioned, "Instead of me dropping the tank and risking the breakage of fuel lines; I purchased a Inline fuel filter which was $6. I don't have the money nor the time to fix as this is my daily driver".

The actual factory fuel filter is mounted below the intake manifold, and above the starter, right to the block. Unless you know where it is, you wouldn't ever think to look there. I found out where it is from a forum here. It is a pain to replace, but it's not mounted in the tank. Also, from info here, I removed and replaced mine recently, and then remounted it to the fender well, as the factory hoses will still fit. That way, I'll never have a problem replacing it in the future.

Again, welcome!!

Well guys forgive me but Im back after a long time. Haven't done a single thing to the truck since I bought it.

Monday morning will change all that. I plan to clean it out with a shop vac and remove a bunch of things. When driving it...it seems to not want to really go...it pulls and tugs...and when starting it you can't start with without adding some gas. So I'm going to probably either rebuild the carb or buy a new one. Another thing...ill need some new wheels and tires soon. Can't think of anything else at the moment.

As always some pictures.

hey man, patience will be your best friend with hooking your yota up. keep up the good work!

if you wanted a cheap and decent looking paint option, i herculined my truck and it looks awesome. herculiner isnt sold at stores anymore, but if you have an ollies near you they have it on sale. its like 60$ and a gallon will easily do your entire truck. just make sure you are 100% prepped prior, because you have to use the whole gallon at one time. check out my build if you get a minute!

Yup. Cleaning is cheap. If you want to get rid of that rust layer on the hood soak some paper towels or an old towel in CLR, spread it out on the rust and put Saran Wrap over it to keep it from drying out. I've not done it but I saw people do it on the H.A.M.B. (hot rod forum) and it gets the rust off and some paint is still there. CLR is a cleaning agent. Most grocery stores and Walmart carry it:

Well here are some pictures at today's task. I also trained the radiator fluid. It was very nasty and stinking...and taste funny....yes Im still alive and didnt mean to have my mouth open.

In one of these pictures you will see some freon (134a) now my 87' can't use 134a from what Im told. So not one of the cans were used. I saved them. I was told to see if the old freon (r14) could be pulled out and added. Does any one know? I know they dont make r14 any more.

Well today was a good day. Got a few things done. Hooked the seat belts back up and did an oil change. Here as always are some pictures.

ROYAL PURPLE

finally got it off

bolt pain to remove

black spray paint.

cleaning the back bed and spray painting

Got it off

Taking off the bumper

Placed the new fender on

The audio doesnt work and the speaker wires are going into this.

speakers werent hooked up and not working.

looked nasty

A/C help also I know this system is r12 or r14...but it was completely out so I filled it with 134a and check it with my gauge. It read 60 low and high was 245 250. So I ddint add any more freon. For some reason the compressor wont kick on unless you directly by pass the switch and go from the compressor to the battery. So how do I test switches?

Since I've done some cleaning, added a new fender, and did some other things. I am now thinking about using rust-oleum truck bed liner inside the cab of my truck. Would have a nice clean look compared to the carpet I through out. And I'd rather spend $50 over $150. Also need help with the fuel gauge. It reads empty all the time. Is there way to fix this?

That's the fuel gauge sending unit. There's no repair other than replacing it. You have to gain access to the top of the fuel tank under the bed. Here's one on eBay for 19.77 plus $15 shipping. The OEM ones are about $200.

I'm not sure if these are okay. Terry87 buys China/eBay fuel pumps and I know he's said they are good.
