Shawn's 86 4runner Turbo (Build Up)

So... let me start off by saying I'm glad to join this forum.

This is my first Toyota project/build but have owned a Toyota for a couple of years now. I have my DD an 01 Tundra with the V8 and have put lots of trouble free miles on her.

I scrolled CL for several weeks and managed to find this a...
1986 Toyota 4runner SR5 Turbo with...
AC, CC, PL, PW, Auto trans, digital gauges, and a sunroof.
It has 211849 miles on it (paperwork shows rebuild 30K ago)
Paid $2000 *after the 40 mile drive home and finding all the little things that don't work I think I may have overpaid a little but that's how it goes sometimes* and having to put a set of cheap-o tires on it day one after finding a giant nail in the inside sidewall of the mismatched tires that were on it.

I am hoping to restore and build it more *mild* than *wild*.

Glad to be on the forum, sure I will be asking tons of questions since I'm not the most talented mechanic but hope to take this slow and low budget and learn as much as I can.

September 26,2015... So this weekend I changed the oil since when I checked it resembled coffee. I read some of the post about oil filters on this site and decided to go with a K&N and I'm sure that I'm going to get a lot of grief but I decided to use Rotella T5 10-30w, I decided to use it because it has a lot of detergents.. maybe clean it out a little.
After doing that I decided to jump into the tedious task of taking my center console apart to replace the tiny bulb by the shifter and to clean the sticky Normal/Power button for the transmission. It didn't work very well so I'm going to have to order a new one, and if anyone hasn't used RockAuto you should give it a try great parts at low cost, never had a problem getting anything I need. Just my 2cents.

ECT button

I took my entire center console apart to clean my ECT button since it was sticky, but it stuck again the first time I pressed it.
So if anyone knows where I can find a replacement let me know.
Thanks.

You got a rare runner. I have yet to see the digital gauge. There will be several issues on these trucks but most are easily fixed. On my build thread links in my signature, I try to post several of the issues that you are going to run into. Welcome to Yotatech.

4runner KO in five min.

So I managed to kill my 4runner and it only took five minutes wow... I had some parts laying around and decided to fab an open air filter type to it. Only took a few min. and it ran great on the test run then it got dark and I decided to finish it up in the am.

But when I put it back together I can't get it to idle. So I put everything back to original and still no idle. Then went and got a new AFM and still nothing. It will run and idle but I have to have the AFM tilted up. I think that has something to do with the little flapper and gravity pushing it down just alittle. All I know is I need help! If anyone can give some advise that would be the best. Please help

Doesn't look like it's plugged in. Fuel pump is powered when key is in the "start" position but in order for the fuel pump to be powered in the "Run" position the computer needs to have a signal from the AFM that air is flowing. It's a safety feature so the fuel pump doesn't run unless the engine is running.

Sorry that was just a photo of the adapter and filter I made. I did plug the AFM in and took it for a test run and it ran great but the next day I couldn't get it to idle so I changed it all back to original and still no idle it just bogs ands dies if you let foot of the gas.

On the road again...

So finally got the yota back on the road. I had to crack open my AFM and lean it way out so that the pump wasn't always running. I only had three notches of adjustment between to high or to low idle. Might still have to fiddle with it a little more but at least its on the road now.

Have you pulled any codes? Sounds real similar to the problem I was having with my 86
