■ (REAR WINDOW WONT GO UP OR DOWN) QUICK JUMPER TEMPORARY FIX:
^^^ My rear window doesn't always work right, I didn't have time to mess with removing the driverside panel to check the relays. After a quick search found this jumper trick, just use a wire to jump the up/down switch. With the key on it rolls up and down,also the tailgate key switch works normally as well, I'm guessing it bypasses all the safety switches? Dont know for sure, Im no electrical wizzard, all I know is it works!
Well I ended up selling my 86' 4runner, and picked up this 87' SR5 as a part trade. It has a 22re/5speed, and 243,000 miles on the odometer, supposedly 80,000ish on the motor. The body has some rust, mainly on the passenger rear quarter wheel well opening, Im hoping that is the extent of it, I guess I'll find out the more i tear into it. The interior needs some TLC. The seats aren't in the greatest shape, but the door panels and side panels are pretty good. The head liner is in really good shape, even on the remove able top. Not my first choice for interior color, but it's in good enough shape that I can work with it. Here's some pics.
I haven't decided on the direction I want to go with this 4Runner yet. On my 86' it wasn't really drivable when I first got it, then I did a SAS and V8 swap on it right off, so this is kind of like my first EFI/IFS equipped toyota in a sense. I'm not going to say that I won't ever sas it, but for now I'm going to just clean it up and fix a few things on it and see how it goes from there. Here's a short list of some of the things I'm going to address first (nothing to exciting).
◆Fix intermittent start issue, (click, no start)
◆Replace the muffler, the current one is completely rotted and half missing.
◆ Get some better tires mounted. It currently has 235R15's on it, and I have another set of 4 like new on my old 76 ford parts truck
◆Fix passenger side front seat. I flipped it forward, and now I can't recline it back into regular sitting position.
◆Clean the inside really good, I think a cat or dog was living in there!
◆ Replace the heater controls. It blows hot, but all the selector switches are trashed.
◆Zuk mod, I'll probably use Jeep tj front coils again.
◆ Try to straighten out the front bumper and valance, replace missing front bumper end caps
A couple long term plans, probably for next spring/summer.
◆Fix rust issues
◆DIY bedliner the whole exterior (white) I'm leaning toward Monsta-liner.
◆Build a locking center console/armrest/cupholder (similar to the one in my 86') to replace the stock beat up one
◆Build a rear bumper/tire carrier
◆ add more things as I think of them
You got the fully SR5 model. I actually like the red interior in these trucks. On the seat issue, with it tilted forward, if I recall right, you leave it tilted forward and grab the release on the inboard side seat rail and you can get it to slide back. Looking forward to your build. IFS will do quite a bit and makes for a fairly smooth ride. When you get to the heater controls, I can post a few things that I think will help you out with that.
Hi Terry, thanks for the tip on the seat! My 86' had second gen 4runner seats in it, so these kind are new to me, lol.
I was kinda hoping that this one had grey interior when I went to look at it, but if I can get it to clean up and look half as good as Misty's 4runner I will be happy! I do think the red interior looks good with the white exterior color! I'm thinking of just doing a DYI bedliner on the exterior (white) after I get the rust issues fixed.
I appreciate any help I can get on the heater controls when the time comes, I haven't got any experience working on them. Do you think I can get a replacement one on ebay? We don't really have any wrecking yards close by here.
I'm happy that I got a tach and inclinometer this time, out of all the toyotas I've had, this is my first SR5. I also like the double map light feature in the rearview mirror!
I do like the ride of the ifs suspension, the rear sags really bad and I can feel the bump stops hit when I go over some harder bumps, think I'll just do the Zuk mod for now. ◇◇◇EDIT◇◇◇ I got the passenger seat back in the reclined position, some jimmy rigged a make shift lever out of pipe, I couldn't figure out how to work it at first, lol, One of these days I'll have to pull the seat out and take a look at it, see if I can make a more permanent fix....anybody find a good fitting rear seat cover for these rigs?
Your plastic and vynil will paint up easily and your cloth on the interior looks to be in great shape. Red carpet is reasonably cheap, but getting the seats done is what gets expensive.
I am not sure if you can get the controls on ebay. If I see some I will post a link for you. I recommend getting the controls with the cables attached. If not disassembled correctly those clips can break easily. It is so much easier removing the main dash support to install the controls. May sound intimidating but I have enough pictures and information that makes the job easy to do. I have tried installing it with the dash and that is frustrating and easy to break something. Give me a few days notice when you do it to get the information up.
On the rear, those bump stops may have at most 2 inches and will jar your back with a hard bump. I would not use Black Magic springs, there are plenty others available that will work better.

That's good to know about the heater controls, I'll try to source some that still have the cables attached. The front seats are really comfortable, way more comfortable than my 86 4runner seats. Hopefully I can find some seat covers that will match decently. Thanks for the heads up on the Black Magic springs, I used jeep TJ coils before and was pretty satisfied with the ride, they are cheap on ebay, I will probably go that route again.
Oh, I got the passenger seat reclined again, the lever was broke off, that's why I couldn't figure it out, I'll have to pull the seat out and weld a new lever on it.
Just noticed today that I have Warn locking hubs, we'll see how well they hold up.

As mentioned earlier, I have been experiencing the infamous starter relay " click no start" issue. I had the same problem on my 86 4runner and ended up buying the Painless Wiring Hot Shot starter relay. The Hot Shot worked well for me, but I wouldn't have spent the $32 bucks on it if I had found RADRunner's writeup first, lol. So this morning I decided to give it a try on the 87'. After getting it wired up I went to try to start it. I barely turned the key and it fired instantly. Before doing this mod it would crank over a few seconds before starting, or just click and not start at all. Later I went to start it again, and to my dismay only got the dreaded click sound. So now I'm suspecting either my starter relay contacts are pitted/corroded, or my starter solenoid contact are bad. I will update this once I investigate further.
Thanks to RADRrunner and Terry for their writeups, at least with this mod done I have one less thing to worry about! Here's a link to RADRunner's writeup/explanation on the how the starting/cranking system works and one for the the starter relay mod incase anyone needs them.
I was driving around town today and every time I shut the 4runner off, when I went to restart it I'd have the "click no start" issue. At one point, I tried starting it in neutral with the clutch pedal out. I was holding the key in the start position, then tried pushing in the clutch and it started. This worked several times, which led me to believe that the clutch safety switch wasn't getting pushed in far enough and might need adjusted out further. So I tried adjusting it before I went to work, and so far it's been starting normally. So hopefully that was the problem.
Hey Buddy!!!! Thats a Nice looking runner you picked up. Has nearly no rust!! I am sad that you parted with the other 4runner but glad you were able to come out with another one.
If you do the Exterior bedliner.......make sure to spray it at a high PSI to generate a fine texture. I did that when I sprayed my lower half and the dirt just washes right off. I have found that with a rougher texture, the dirt and grime tend to stick to the bedliner and makes it look like crap.
I think that you should still SAS this one but keep it mild but capable like we talked about. 3" springs and 33's or 35's. Something that can wheel but still be DD capable during the week.

Hi Mark. I will miss my 86' too, with the money I got from it's sell we are going to pay off my wife's durango, then the remainder of the money I'm putting as a down payment to buy my father-in-law's 2002 Chevy Silverado Z71 X-cab, he is going to let me make payments on the rest. But like you said, I'm glad I got another 4runner to play with, it will help ease the pain of selling my other one, lol. I think I got a pretty decent deal on it for $1200!
About the bedliner, I don't have access to an air compresser, so that was one of the reasons I was leaning towards using Monsta-liner since it can be applied with a roller. I got some colored samples awhile back and it seems really durable, and the texture seems to be more of a smoother fine texture, not rough. I'd like to go all white, and maybe copy the factory SR5 stripes in a light grey. I would be interested to hear your opinion on the Monsta-liner since you have alot more experience working with diy bedliners.I really like the looks of this one:
I have a hard time leaving things stock, so I'm sure this 4Runner will eventually get sas'd... I would like to keep the COG a little lower this time, like you mentioned keep it mild yet capable, although 4wheel Underground's front 3 link kit would be sweet!
I thought I had the click no start problem too but all it was that I wasn't pushing the clutch in far enough.
I might need to adjust the clutch safety switch a little more, it still does it once in awhile, if I release the clutch and push it back in it usually starts right up.
I worked on the 4runner a little today. I couldn't handle the sound of the exhaust any longer, it was so obnoxiously loud, lol. I didn't have any money to buy a muffler, so I took the one off my 76' ford parts truck, it was longer (24") so I had to remove my cat to make room for it, which was fine, it was probably the original cat and plugged anyway, plus I don't have to worry about smog. I cut the flange off the cat and welded it to the new exhaust pipe (which was 2-1/4") that went to the new muffler, then welded the hangers onto it. Took it for a test drive, it's so much quieter now, and feels like it got some more power too, it seemed pretty doggy before.
Sometimes the links will show others available when looking for one at another time. With Christmas and all that goes with it, Im having to put things on hold. Even some things that may not cost much get the back burner. I think that is what makes a truck more enjoyable when done is the patience it takes to get the parts needed.
Seems like an exhaust will disintegrate over night when it does start rusting away. On the converters, I remove mine and there is nothing in them, they just burn up until nothing is left. I scrapped two converters and nothing in there. They were the original ones.
If you want to completely by pass the clutch safety switch, just above the fuse box on the firewall, a jumper wire will fix that. Been awhile since I messed with the safety switch but I am just used to the old cars not having them that I bypass the safety. It will start in gear.
No major updates. My mpg improved since putting on the muffler. I went from around 18 mpg to 20mpg. That's with an average speed of around 50 mph and with the front hubs locked in due to weather conditions. We took it on a 500 mile round trip to Yakima and back. The 4runner ran great and I got 23mpg on the freeway, I'm happy with that, nearly double the mpg's of my 302 4runner.
I played around in the snow a little today, I tried to following some snowmobile tracks up this old logging road, my nearly bald tires are definitely a limiting factor, lol. I had to back up about an 1/8th mile since there was nowhere to turn around.
Hopefully I will be addressing the tire situation soon, I want to get some 31 or 32x10.50x15's, not sure which one yet. I've been looking at getting some of the older factory toyota rims, found a set of 4 for $100 on CL, hope to get the money together before there gone. Here's the wheels I want to get.

Thanks Terry. It did build my confidence up in this rig. I had already put around 1000 miles on it as a dd without any problems, but I was still a little hesitant in taking it on that long of a trip. But we didn't have any choice, my wife had an accident the week before on black ice and went end over end in our Durango, so it was totalled out. We ended up making a deal with my father-in-law on his 2002 Chevy Silverado Z71 extended cab, and she drove that back coming home from Yakima. It's a nice truck and alot more comfortable to drive than her Durango.
