I'll be the guinea pig and order some of these and try and do a comparison. I'll likely contact Roger from the 4crawler site after receiving them and see what he thinks.
I just ordered this two minutes ago from miparts.com. $21.78 ($8 for two thermos and $13.78 for shipping) including shipping for two of them. Comes from China and takes 25-45 days for delivery. I also got 3 of the Kia ones off ebay for $24 shipped (new in box made in Korea). I haven't ordered the gates one yet, they have them at rockauto, but the cost is close enough for me to spend the extra $7 on a Toyota one. I'll take a south korean made part over a china made part all things being equal.
We shall see....

I think people are reading my thread, which is a good thing. There were 4 Gates thermostats last night on Rockauto.....now they are out of stock!
Sent an email to Roger from 4crawler, didn't appear he was aware of these before. He's been using the same Toyota thermo for 18 years (didn't ask about miles) So $2.xx a year for a Toyota thermo and gasket is great, so this could make this whole research project moot....spend the money on a Toyota part and don't worry about it for a long long time. I've only had mine in for a few years now.
But I guess if one these less expensive alternatives lasts just as long or a similar dollar to year ratio then it may be a good alternative. So if my Kia thermo lasts 3 years, then i paid just $2 a year for a thermo since I only paid $6 each. At $13 from Kia dealership I would hope to get 6 years.
Found out that Ford uses the same thermo also. The Ford part # 4109502 and Hella has a branded thermo for it.....

First off great build thread. All the restoration and mod jobs amazingly documented. Definitely a motivational build. Question, in the beginning of your build your truck had a roof rack and a single tall rack at the rear of the bed for your yak. Do you by chance remember the manufacturer and what it would be called or one similar to it? Thanks and keep the updates coming!

Thanks, and I think you're talking about this one?
That one was custom made by a friend. It was basically a cheap version of the Yakima Outdoorsman 300.

Hello everyone, long time no see. Nothing to report, truck is running fine.
Just wanted to add some useful links in case you didn't catch my post on the open forum. This has to do with stud/bolt extraction. Found a popular guy not very far from me. See and read the articles, pretty amazing that he has a 1940's machine to disintegrate those nasty bolts studs.

Other than coming across this site and using him for some plumbing stuff (he's only 15 minutes from me - lucky me!), tuna season has been pretty good. My older bro got the big 150lbr and I got the little 75lbr...bluefin tuna. Got one more trip next weekend and the season ends for me.

Thanks guys! My latest update is the DEAL OF THE CENTURY!!!! I picked up a brand new in the box Toyota 22RE full engine gasket kit for the once in a lifetime price of less than $24 ! Unbelievable, I got it from Goodwill of all the places in the world..who would've ever thought. I'm ready for my timing chain replacement in about 8-9 years!...
Before this, my best purchase from goodwill was a slightly used Smokin-it Smoker ($330 shipped) for $60

I got a 2-stage thermostat fro LC Engineering but package is not a Toyota Package. Got pics and questions on Two-Stage Thermostat Thread here.

Well after reading 16 or so pages of this thread, I feel like I almost know a few of you guys. I just wanted to express thanks for all the in-depth write-ups and detailed pictures throughout. It really has helped me and most of all I got what I was specifically looking for... what the heck to do about these less than stellar seatbelts that need to be replaced in my 89 pickup DLX. Along the way though, I started a spreadsheet filled with to-do's, website to purchase stuff and how many organs I need to sell to get this done.
Still, finding my way around these posts, so i'll just give a thumbs up and thanks for each post.

Posted this reply by me on another post, but putting it here for my own information
Hey Ray,
As far as the Tama brand, I don't know if they are OEM for Toyota. I just went to their website and can only go by what it states which is the parts under their brand are made by OEM's. And yes, the gasket around the thermostat is needed and my Toyota cam with one.
http://www.tama-e.co.jp/en/business.html
I guess if you were going to look into using a Tama it may be worthwhile looking into an NTC one that is made for Mazda. A friend of mine who is into RX7's had told me that NTC was the OEM supplier for cooling parts. Just a quick search brought up this part no.8AK1151719U which I think cross references to the Tama part no. However, I don't know if it comes with the gasket or not. I don't know how much you paid, but if it's close to the Toyota branded cost, then I would just get a Toyota one. If it's like $20 cheaper then.....I would probably try it! I had no idea about the options when I purchased my Toyota one so I didn't go through that dillema. If the one I have ever goes bad I'm going to pop in one of the KIA ones I got for super cheap. ***CHECK THIS OUT RAY!****

***CHECK THIS OUT RAY!**** I know it's just amazon, but the seller is Toyota and says it's a genuine Toyota part, and the picture shows NTC on top!

Truck is running great still. Did something fun and added a new rear view mirror. Well, new to me anyhow. Junkyard special Gentex 177 with auto dimming, compass and temperature. It came from mid 90's Chevy Suburban I believe and was a whopping $12 I think? maybe cheaper (that includes the $3 entry fee into the yard), it was a 40% day. It was pretty easy and just read the thread on here about install into a 3rd Gen 4runner. Used a Dorman universal button (the metal piece that glues to the windshield). No real science to it, just measured up as close as I could get it BUT still allowing room to be able to slip the mirror down over the button after it is glued to the windshield. Dismantled the mirror so I could paint it charcoal grey to match the interior (orig. black). Don't forget to grab the temp sensor from the vehicle also. Just 4-wires, accessory/ignition power, ground, and two wires to the temp sensor. I fished the wires through the cab so it looks custom. Really happy with this mod and it looks factory after the paint job.

Looooonnggg time since I've posted anything. My truck still continues to run great, and some things I recall doing was changing out the ORIGINAL 02 sensors with Denso ones from Rock Auto. It was a little confusing trying to figure out which ones I needed, but figured out the upstream and downstream (Cali emission) is now the same part number. They were not when the truck was originally built back in 92', so I wasted some time trying to match the numbers on the my original 02 sensors. What I needed were two of the following:
DENSO 2344052
Fits Upstream
or Downstream
or Downstream; RWD; Calif.; Short Bed
My truck sure seems to idle better now! guess I waited a bit long and probably lost some mpg's along the way.
The only major issue I've had was that my A/C finally went out on me! I still had R-12 in the system, no leak, but there was no cold air, just fan blowing. My smog check guy also did some general mechanic work and he told me it had to be the expansion valve. He had the license to refill it with R-12 and it would be expensive, but he could do it. I decided to have him evacuate the R-12 from the system, and I would do the repair. Luckily our evaporators are not a pain to get to. Since I was changing out the expansion valve, I decided to just replace the evaporator at the same time. I received a made in Japan Denso 476-0048 evaporator from Rock Auto but the expansion valve was Denso 475-2086 and made in China. The expansion valve is for both R-12 and R-134, they no longer make same part that my truck came with. It was easy peasy.....using denso products means perfect fit. A little bit of following the factory manual to move things over and one hiccup with the pipe that I replaced after mangling the aluminum nut. The replacement pipe was in-stock from the following from Long Beach Toyota:
88716-89156 - $27.21 PIPE, COOLER REFRIGERANT LIQUID, F
90099-14056 - $ 2.38 O-RING - This was to replace the o-ring on the switch that I re-used (see pic below)
Cost me $200!!! to have the air evacuated out, pressure tested, and then filled back up with R-12. He was going to charge me almost $700 to do everything, it ended up costing me about $380 to do most of it myself and with a brand new evaporator!
OLD EVAPORATOR OUT
MANGLED ALUMINUM NUT
NEW EXPANSION VALVE
REPLACING O-RING FOR SWITCH
EVAPORATOR PART NUMBER
ASSEMBLED AND READY TO GO BACK IN

Thanks for checking back in!
How many miles on the rebuild now?
Nice work fixing the A/C yourself. I am in the process of a r134a conversion now. Not only did you save a lot you know it was done right
Enjoy the cold air!

Hey, nice to hear from you. I have 240,300 miles on the odometer, so that means about 51,000 on the rebuild. Yes, always best to know you did it yourself and know exactly what type of parts are being used. I will do the conversion next time, hopefully my son will be old enough to help me by that time!
