Finally My 5vz swap on 2wd

Hello Yotatech, it has been some time since i last been on here. I finally got a great deal on a donor car ( 96 T100 with 289k) and now ready to finally do my 5vz swap. I've been wanting to do this swap for about 10 years now, So i pretty much already got started on removing the motor from the donor truck today and so i am contemplating if i should rebuild the motor or not. I think im going to do a compression check to see if i need to. The motor is in great shape considering the mileage or even if that is the original motor.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So Here are my plans ----
Swap the 5vz
Do Routine Maintenance such as gaskets and timing belt
LC Engineering S/C with 2.2 pulley
URD 7th injector
97 ECU to have the motor recognize the S/C
CAI
Mating the Motor behind the 5 speed manual( i have an auto)

So i have a couple of questions for you guys that already did the swap....

1) All i need is the engine harness? or do i need to snag the dash harness as well. I am gonna go with ORS to get the wiring harness.

2) Im about to get rid of the donor truck, Is there anything else i would need to grab from it that i might be forgetting.

What i got so far from the donor truck
- Engine w\ Harness
- Alt, Power steering w\hoses
- Motor mounts
- ECU
- Starter

Dash harness connectors with enough wire to splice so you can make it plug and play instead of spliced in directly without connectors.

I don't know, have to ask ORS. The only connectors from the ecm are to the engine harness and the dash harness.

Well just spoke with Mike over at ORS and he states that that his harness does not require you to need the dashboard harness. ORS harness fuses both harnesses.

Hey Shoes!

If you can keep that donor vehicle I wouldn't get rid of it yet. You never know what you may need to pull out of it. Parts forgotten are right in your back yard... Hell, even metric JIS bolts are nice sometimes if they're in decent shape. I still have my donor sitting outside and won't get rid of it until I'm done but I have the room...

Don't forget the battery harness to pull the starter cable out unless your going to build a new one. Hard to say what else you would need considering there's alot of little things. Seems like you have the major parts though...

Not sure if you have the time but I would spend the $15 and take a stab at the wiring yourself. That's my regret so far. I saved by going through ToyOnlySwaps instead of ORS but.... I could have used those hundreds elsewhere. Double edged sword I suppose... It did save me some time which I don't really have. I bought the 2 day subscription from techinfo to get the power window EWD a few days ago. It's a bit difficult at first but once you download everything, combine all files in one PDF, and use the search function it makes things easy. Just my $0.02 but good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Ya unfortunately i cannot keep the donor vehicle in the garage. I have to get rid of it, dont like having the wifes Camry outside. Ya i think im going to pull the cat off with the O2 sensor mounts and also pull the gas pedal line. Im going to reuse my charcoal canister of my truck and thats about it. I took the battery harness already off, so there is not much on the donor vehicle now.

So i look at Toyswaponly for their wiring harness and saw that it was a lot cheap than ORS, but i really like the plug n play feature that ORS offers and that you dont need to tear apart the donor dash and figure out what you need. Also Mike is an awesome resource, ive spoke to him twice and he has been a big help! I dont mind that its a lil more expensive as long as it works and save me time, because everyone know time is money and money is time.

As far as FSM i have one for a tacoma and also the 93 toyota pickup and all of them come with the EWD, but i dont even want to try and attempt to do the wiring myself, that looks so confusing. Im sure within time i could figure it out, but ive been waiting for 10 years to do this swap and cannot wait any longer now that i have all the necessary parts. I would love to do what you doing to your rig but i dont have the space or tools.

So i am finally getting into taking apart my truck now, got a lil done today. This weekend im looking to take the engine and tranny out so i can sell it with the t100 to the junk yard. They are going to be giving me 325 for everything, I think that a good deal considering that i only paid 800 for the truck initially, Although i know they will sell at least one of the trannys for that price. I just really want the truck out of my garage for i can clean up the garage, park the wifes car in the garage and start to rebuild the motor or at least just clean it up and start to paint as well as dress it up. Whelp here are the pics of todays adventure. Man its so much easier to disassembly once you have done one already. I disconnect practically everything in few short hours. The next step is just to unbolt the motor mounts as well as tranny, then pull her out.

Do you guys think 325 is too low of a price to get rid of the truck??

The T100 rear axle is worth more than that alone.

That is probably a fair price going to the junk yard. Parting it out could net you a several more dollars depending on your area and if the parts are needed. If you are in an area where Toyotas are popular it might be worth it but for the most part, dealing with no shows and they try to haggle you down in prices that are reasonable, it to me just is not worth the hassle. I might would run a Craigslist ad for a week to sell some parts and then send it to the boneyard. At least it is going to the bone yard and there will be a chance for others to get some parts off of it. A 3.4 with the manual transmission is going to make your truck scoot down the road.

So yesterday i was able to get out the original engine out of the yota. I must say once you pull one motor out, getting the other motor out is rather faster and easier. With that being said i will now move on to cleaning the engine bay up and now look to the 5vz and doing the regular Maintenance such as timing belt and a few others. I also need to do compression test on the motor to see if it can handle the S/C. I also put the t100 on craigslist and hopefully have someone coming out today to look at it, that's if they do not flake!

Its crazy to think that this is the original motor that was in the truck has been with me since i've been a baby. Sniif sniff good bye 3vz....

Ya man that's the plan lol.....so the junkyard took the donor truck and gave me 245 for it....I think I came out good on the deal. I spent 800 on the truck, they got a seized motor and two auto trannys with a smashed up body.

So just did the compression test on 2 cylinders and I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or if it's the tester that I'm using. I'm reading like 60 psi and did about 12 revolution and that's about how high it goes. When the 5vz was running man that thing was smooth so I doubt the compression test is right. Any suggestions????

Put a little oil down the cyl and try the test again. If the number jumps up a lot, the rings are bad. If I remember correctly, compression tests should be performed with the engine warm.

60psi does seem quite low though, even for cold. My dad has a 5vz in a T100 with 300k miles with no issues, and mine has 240k and another parts 4runner with 270k, and all run great. Seems that the 3.4L is a nice solid engine like 99% of all Toyota engines even the 3vz.

If you was local, I would have grabbed the T100 for $250 site unseen. I bought one with a locked up 3.4L and a TON of parts taken off it for $100, and another basically cab on frame with an engine that has problems for $400. Found the crank sensor mounting location is broken on the runner and it has 330k miles lol. I valued them fairly high because the T100 is the key to putting the 3.4L in the older 4x4 pickups, primary the transfer case.

How did you do the compression test?

Tests should be done warm. And at WOT with the injectors disabled.

If this motor is not installed how did you crank it?

Ya i did the Compression test on 3 other cylinders and they all came up with the same results, I am thinking that it may be a defective tool. I doubt that the engine has that low of compression and was running as good as it was. I should have did a compression test with the engine in the t100 but i didnt think to do it since the motor seems in great shape.

Ya i know the junk yard got a a great deal but like i said i just wanted to out of the garage and the wifey wanted it out of the garage. So happy wife happy life right?

I cranked the motor at the crank pulley with a breaker bar, it also could be done with the flywheel installed and just powering up the starter to turn the motor. My motor as you see is already mounted so i had to remove the flywheel and could not attach the starter to start the motor.
