dirtdobberoffroad's 86 xtra cab build

I pickup up a 86 extra cab 22RE/auto trans from a buddy for $300, I rebuilt the top end about a year and a half ago because that's what he wanted done finally got it to run and it sounds like someone is swinging a 12lb sledge around in the bottom end, I pulled he pan and found the #3 rod was sloppy and told him what was wrong so it sat in my drive way for a year and I offered him 300 for it and got it.

It has cancer like most toys of that vintage I think the exhaust was cut off behind the cab because there is a flex connector at that spot and that caused the bed to rust out and every thing behind that spot on the exhaust has surface rust the frame, axle, leaf springs, bed....

I won't have to build this one under a carport and a 8x8 shed!!! We had another girl she is 1, my boy is 2, and my oldest girl is 5. Im gonna need some parts for this one too I had to sell all my SAS stuff I saved up. but I still have a 4cyl tcase I got from you when you met Jason at Jonesboro. so I plan to use that in this build.

Im in south east Missouri Jcrawl, but I don't understand what your talking about???

picked up some 84 4runner parts the other day for free a guy was moving out of state and selling his house and didn't want to take all the stuff, the funny thing is this is the same 4 runner I have the frame for in the back yard and the same 4runner all my SAS stuff came off of that I had to sell.... I also picked up a 80's Smitty built dual rollbar, and extra head that looks good. chrome grill and headlight bezels bunch of small parts and buckets of Toyota bolts....

If I recall right, don't you have some family over by Springfield? If so let me know and I can get you an address for a salvage yard over there.

So looking around at rebuild kits for the 22RE, I know when I rebuilt my 82 pickup with a 20/22R hybrid engnbldr was about the best. Has that changed? The only part of his kit that I had problems with was the head gasket and I think that might have been from a contaminated mating surface, but I used a Fel-pro and the truck is still going good even with hard use from my brother-n-law using as a construction go-for truck.

I have never done the 20/22r hybrid so not much help there. I got all my things from Engine Builder and it worked out great. What bit me in the rear was thinking the machine shop had cleared all the passages and apparently they did not. My fault for not checking but basically caused oil starvation and the camshaft broke. Check all passage ways and clean all the bolt holes. The bolt holes I did do.

These are truck tanks. Here I am showing the difference between the fuel injected and carbed truck tanks. A 4Runner had the fill and vent lines completely oppisite of each other. They are not interchangeable as far as a bolt in fit. I have a picture some where showing the difference between 4Runner and truck tanks but cannot find it at this time. I will see if I have a truck and 4Runner tank and can show the difference.

Here is a 4Runner tank. Notice how the Fill neck is different from the truck tanks above.

I am now thinking about a 2/3rz swap in the truck but I want to keep my IFS and I have not seen a completed 3rz swap with IFS. What I thinking is a 2" body lift and 2"drivetrain lift to get a flat belly and to lift the 3rz up over the Ifs enough to make that part easy. I looked at 1uz for the truck and had a line on a whole car for 500 bucks but the radiator and transmission cost where too much. so a 2/3rz is what Im thinking instead of rebuilding my 22re. but if I cannot get a line on one I will rebuild the 22re.

I have finally figured out how I'm going to build the truck, expo style with a 32x11.50 tire, OME Heavy torsion bars and springs, 1.5" ball joint spacers, Bilstien shocks, factory 4.30 gears until I can find a set of factory 4.88 to go in Aussie locker for rear, a manual trans swap G54 and forward shift low range box and dual transfer case adapter and a top shift that will go in, rebuild the 22re I have not seen as much info on the 3rz swap (with IFS) that I thought I would and I don't like flying blind, try and find a bed with out as much cancer and repaint factory color.

so after finally figuring out what I wanted to do and posting it to the public, I got a call from my pastor and he asked if I would be interested in a Toyota 4runner the guy wants a couple of hundred so he does not have to haul it back home after a missionary training camp. I said yes didn't know what year what shape it was in nothing but it runs and has a bad knock.

I went to get it that night and it is a 85 (efi/solid front) W56a trans with top shift tcase, old 33x12.50 BFG AT's, might as well have no body, the rust is bad and whats not rusted is bashed in, good dash and nothing but surface rust on the frame, still I was super exited we loaded it up and hauled it home. When I got home I figured out ignition is bad and it has to be hot wired fired it up and the knock started out as a squeal and then a bottom end knock. 312,xxx miles on the odometer. so now I have to start planning my build again. all I know its gonna have a 86 extra cab on the 4runner frame and a super short bed. I want to run a 33x10.5x15 or 255/85/16 and that would be the largest thing I would ever put on it possibly a 32x11.50.

If you get out here one day and want to bring it here, I would help you assemble it. A thing I do is to un plug the Injector Harness from the computer and assemble it on the engine stand. So much easier doing it on the stand then in the truck and when you put it back in the engine bay, it goes so much quicker on getting it started. Saves your back a lot of trouble too.
