775Toy's 84 X-cab build Thread
It's been a few years since I owned a yota. Got tired of beating up my 00 lifted f150 in the hills that I drive daily. So I picked up this 84 xcab a few weeks ago for 100$. It has sat quite a few years on a guys ranch outside Reno and spent most of its life in Tahoe , the red stuff all over it is fire retardant from a nearby fire last summer. My goals are to build a reliable and able hunting/trail rig on a reasonable budget. It will be a fairly slow build due to my current family with the addition to a new baby girl in a few months , along with all my other projects and hobbies. I've been gathering parts for the past few weeks and havnt really got down and dirty yet. But with the parts piling up its gonna see some nice improvements soon. Heres what I got so far. Lots of pics.
How it sat

The truck sits at the shop , my wife claims its so ugly I can't bring it home till its prettier. So I have been cleaning it here and there on my lunch break.
Stripped some in wanted items off it and started scrubbing the retardant off and cleaning the interior.
One lunch break and almost one side done lol
And hood
Pretty much all im getting off till I get it ready for paint this spring.
Some interior cleaning
Pulled out all the broken plastic on xcab panels , gonna make my own door and xcab panels soon.
Was cruising the swap meet and picked up a cheap dash mat !

Waiting on some more little stuff before I get my suspension and steering together. Can't bob the bed till I get my rear sus setup and waiting on a ifs box and knuckle kit. So I did a some tiajuana body work on the radiator support , and took care of some rust
Painted grill
By no means perfect but worked ^ just gotta mess around with the headlight mounting and side markers. But ok with what I had to work with
Enough for one lunch break. So started on shackles after work.
My first time with a plasma so there a lil ugly , but way faster than anything else. Gotta do some grinding still to get them all legit. They will work

It's far from a rust free truck , mostly surface rust but pretty much everywhere from being in lake Tahoe 90% of its life. The bed is far from perfect with lots of lil dents and rust. At one point someone welded the sides back on the lower rear. Pretty ugly but perfect for a bob job non exo rig.

775Toy,
nice job on the build so far, can't wait to see how it turns out. How much are you bobbing?

Tell me about it. Im in clermont till the end of the week and have been trying to find a better bed for my truck. They want 500 for a slightly rusted one!! Old Toyotas are rare around here.

Thanks tinman. It's gonna be a long build , but I'm keeping my goals within reach . I'd like to get it suspension/lift/paint and mechanically sound by this summer to do some basic clean up and be able to cruise the hills . Next year is another story , geared/locked/built axels/dual cases and rebuilt motor ready for fordice and rubicon the summer after.

Ya the tray was crazy rusted , there was no fixing it so I cut it out. I gotta do the same cut on the driver side also. When I get my suspension set up I'm gonna run longer shocks up front so I'll have to cut more out to mount the hoops. I'll figure out a battery mount when it comes time. I'll have to check out your build.

I know a lot of people cut out their fenders for the shock hoops. All I did was take a mallet and beat the inner fender well up in that area. When I say "beat" it's actually a tap. Trick is to let the mallet warm the metal by the repeated tap. Then it will start to form in, without mangling the metal.
I'm running the 12" shock hoops, and if the front springs don't relax anymore, I'm going to have to change to 14" front shocks. And I looks the back is relaxing so much I might have to move the shock mounts, or change to 10" shocks in the rear.
