travis_h's 82 pickup build
Ok i've been building on this truck about the last 8 years. this is going to be a past, present and future build. I'll start off this thread with giving a bit of history on the truck and digging up any old pics i find for the past part. then get into the more current part of the build and continue into the future of the truck.
My truck is a 1982 toyota standard cab long bed 4x4 that i bought as a bone stock truck with a bad head gasket from a farmer who lived near my cousin for $500. My cousin called me one night and told me about the truck and so i drove a couple hours and bought it and we towed it to his house where it sat until i could get a trailer and go get it. ill edit and post pics of it later if i can find any of the day i got it.
I bought a reman longblock and put that in along with getting a 5' skyjacker lift and a 2" B.L. a buddy and i did some 5.29 gears and i found some decent used 35x12.50r15's. shortly after we got it running i built a flatbed and cut the frame behind the shackles a little way.
I drove the truck for a while like that before i finally decided i liked the truck, but it just needed more power.. So a friend of mine had found a 72 GMC jimmy and i swapped the 350 th350 205 into my truck. i had little things i tinkered on for a while, but pretty much just drove it like it was.
Then i decided to get my bed back from a friends house and bob it and put it back on.

After the bed was done I decided to do a different lift so I went with a 5"hd trail-gear along with high steer and u bolt flips
I built my own front hanger and made a receiver in the front

My next step was to rewire the whole truck... What fun that was. I had a wiring harness from another project that hadn't been used so I started with that. Along with the wiring I also gutted the interior and built a new dash from some aluminum and welded all the holes in my firewall up.

Then I decided now I wanted to do something different with my exhaust. I had a 2 into 1 with a flowmaster 40 series, but I wanted true dual from the headers back. So I have a friend who builds mufflers for circle track racing and I had him build me two with the inlet and outlet on the same end so I could dump the exhaust in front of my tires. Them have a very different sound not like any muffler I heard before and I like the sound.
Also by doing my dual exhaust I needed to remove my fuel tank so I put a fuel cell in my bed under my toolbox. I built a fill for it into the side of my toolbox and ran a hose through it so I can fill up easier.

Next on my list I decided to do build up the running gear some more. I bought a doubler and some other parts and got a 14 bolt rear. I did a disc brake swap and 4.10 gears. I sold my Toyota axles, tires and wheels along with some extra's and got some more parts. Dana 60, another 14 rear, 350, th400, 203 and some stock size tires on wheels.
I mounted my dual cases and made my shifters and a new floor mount.
I got the rear axle in and decided to move the drivers spring pad on the front axle to match my Toyota spring width then narrowed the front to match.
I still need to get an axle shaft made for the front and build steering, shock mounts, drivelines and some little stuff.

That pretty much brings me up to where I am at today. I still have a lot to go and this will probably be a slow build for a while from this point with the holidays. Next on my list is wheels and tires and so I took the ones off my bother in laws truck which happens to be in my driveway and put them on to see how I liked the backspace on them. Their 37 x 13 x 15 with 4 1/2" backspace.
I like the tire size, but I'm not sure what tire I'll go with yet I have mostly sand here and mud in spring and fall and like trails too.
Will keep updating as I go and add pics that I find later.

Ok I started to build a cowl hood scoop for the truck yesterday. Got the hood off, cut and the cowl tacked on today. Still have a bit of work to do still, but I'm at a standstill on anything that cost money for a while. So I have lots of time to focus on this and a few other things.

Thanks. Ya it's cost a bit to get to where it is today. Ya the dash turned out pretty good I thought. It's all aluminum except the tags for the shift pattern and the toggle switches are engraved plastic.

Ok I have done a little on the truck, but nothing major lately. Kinda short on funds for a while. I hope to finish my hood this weekend if nothing else comes up. I also started to cut my front fenders to make room for tires turning. I cut the front off at the bottom of the light. Hope to build a front bumper sometime. I also built a shroud on my radiator and mounted a bigger fan to it. A 16" fan almost twice the cfm of what my old one was. The truck used to get hot when I would crawl around.

Thanks for the comments. Here is a pic of the whole dash. Kinda dark though. I can get more crossmember pics. I'll try to find some of my phone or take some tomorrow.

I don't remember the thickness i think 3/16". It was the thickest I could get in the size. Also it has 1/4" plate for gussets. As for the bolts hanging down. I'm gonna do a piece of tube going over them and incorporate it all into my skid plate. It's not done yet, but should be plenty strong when finished.
