Dropzone's 1981 Trekker Build-Up Thread

Played around with the timing and idle adjustment a little yesterday afternoon. It was pretty close to what the manual specifies. With carb cleaner didn't find any vacuum leaks, but did replace a couple of lines... Noticed what sounds kind of like a valve tick, didn't have time to adjust the valves again. last time I tweaked the valves it looked like some of the valve adjusting screws (dunno what the correct term is) looked a little worn so I pulled some off an extra head and will swap those hopefully next week.
Than get a trip permit and take this POS through DEQ and see if it passes. If it doesn't will throw on the weber carb.
If that option fails, will debate rebuilding the head or go for a complete long block.. Urrrrrrrr.

last time I was at Pick and Pull I saw 4 of them like this:
just something that has crossed my mind..would hate to go this route but it might be kind of fun too...I would seriously learn a lot with regard to fab and welding..having it registered as a 74 or earlier = free for all
edit:
this is what I would really like to have though someday:
in the long run I will just keep working on this thing..Had it for 4.5 years. My wife is aweome enough to let it take up most of the garage and doesn't freak out on me if I keep the purchases little here and there...I do the usual beg for cash when we get the tax refund..one reason why I am thinking kind of february'ish I might be able to pick up a long block

That old 4door is BAD@$$!!! Love to find one of those or maybe make own. I would keep the Trekker, its sweet. Maybe find a early 80s 4x4 frame and swap pre 74 body on it would be cool. Throw a 22r thats been built up. Possibilities are endless but the the wallet isnt endless haha I know what you mean by tax refund and beg for money for the Yota. Thats the same boat I'm in. My wife would rather me make the piece or fix what I got then buy a new. but she still gets me stuff for the old Yota.

hey robb, haven't been online in a while... glad to see such awesome progress on the trekker! every once in a while i get thrown into your neck of the woods for work, a few drive by's but i never see the truck outside!! (did i tell you i have a new job?)
if you still can't pass emissions with a new cat make sure you have some miles on the truck on the new cat or it will never pass. i had a new one on mine and it barely passed after some loooong drives. and keep the engine revved up around 2 grand until they test it... it helps keep everything warm and working properly! i actually drove mine down tualatin-sherwood hwy in second gear all the way to the test station!

Hey Al! Welcome back!
Good to hear from you. Thanks for the advice on the cat. I just wanna get this thing back on the road. Truck was out for a little bit today.
How is your truck doing? Finish the rebuild? I'll send you my number.
I am kind of pumped. Found out I can add comprehensive insurance (fire, theft & vandalism) for less than $20/ year so of course I am going to do that, especially with all the toyotas that get ripped off around Portland and Vancouver. Just have to drop off pics to the insurance agent.

Looks awesome Robb. Glad to see you finally got your welder out too. My first try at sheet metal welding was just a week ago. You should just run your Trekker with 225/75/15 tires like I do Hope you are able to figure out how to mount the LB gas tank up under there.

hopefully I can get the LB tank to work
Glad you like it Ian. I should have gotten a pic with the lights just wired to the battery, it puts out quite a bit of light. I have a Blue Sea Aux fuse block to go in and plans for a few switch..just need time
I need to redrill the mounting tab for the HID though I got it a little too close to the stinger bar and can't get a cover on the light..
I threw the plate I was practicing on in the recycle bin...my welds will keep the flapper disk companies in business

What lights are you using for your rock lights? While I got all the wiring stripped down in my truck I'd like to integrate the wiring for my (to be) driving lights and rock lights into the wiring of the truck for a cleaner look.
Have a link for them?

LED Rocklight links & output comparisons
I am using two different styles:
the one on the bumper are similar to these ($10 cheaper than what I paid):

and i also have a bunch of these:

the little ones put out an incredible amount of light for their size

Starting to think the camera on my iPhone has had it, pic quality is going down hill-
Anyway picked up a set of 26 LED brakes lights to match the turn signals, not necessary but now they match. I am glad I did this as this set puts out more light, both in taillight and brake light mode:
These also have an integrated reflector in them, something the other set did not have, probably a good deal legalitywise
