I can't wait until they redesign the Tacoma - I'm sick of my Tundra chugging fuel and I don't need a fullsize truck anymore, but I want to see what they do to the Tacoma over the next year and a half. If the new design looks good (and rumor has it that they may do a diesel) then I'll get one, if not I'll go with a left over. Knowing my luck, the new design will be hideous and I'll be waiting for nothing.
I needed my tundra the year I bought but at that time I didn't want to scratch it or get it dirty (wipe you feet please)
Now I speed at dusk and hope a large deer makes an offer on it
I tend to not avoid potential accidents as well... I like it still, but a beat up 2005 truck with 145,000 miles isn't going to bring much at sale or trade
I haven't been able to do anything to my truck lately mostly because it hasn't been running for almost 3 months. Was finally able to get a rebuilt throttle body for my 2rz. Had to wait almost 2 months for it. Now that it's finally back up and running, I plan on fixing the rest of the problems I have encountered.
I finally started working on the Toyota this past week since it has been neglected for the past couple months. I was able to get a upgraded power steering pump installed and was also able to do a couple other little things that needed to be fixed. After fixing that stuff I was looking it over to make sure there wasn't something else that needed to be fixed and got the bad news. Found a broken shock and also a broken frame. Now the plan is to do a frame swap. So I will do my best to keep this build thread updated. Since I'm going to be starting with basically just the frame I plan on making it really nice. Also planning on getting it painted since it's gonna be down for awhile.
Finally found a frame that is in good shape. Doesn't have any rust and is straight. I will be picking it up in about a week, just waiting for him to finish striping it. Some of the stuff I will need to do to it will already be done so that will also help with the swap. I plan on doing a lot of work to the truck while it's apart so hopefully by the time it is all back together it will be completely finished including paint.
Thanks! I'm doing the frame swap because I broke my frame... I will post some pictures when I get the bed off and it's a little easier to see it. It's all the way around the frame. The reason I'm not buying another truck though is because with mine being 2rz swapped I would have to take all my wiring out as well as remount everything for it again. If I frame swap it I wont have to do that. And either way I will have to do all the suspension again anyways so will save me a little bit of work in the end.

I just scored a 1981 Toyota pickup from TN. I had it shipped up to me in Delaware and I'll be doing some of the things you've done to yours in the future. Right now I'm scrounging CL/Yotatech/Pirate/Fleebay and just about any other place I can find old virgin Toyota sheetmetal to replce my rusted crap. I am only left with finding a bed and a tailgate which I knew would have been the most difficult.
On your 63" chevy spring conversion did how far did you move the spring hangers? Every person I talk to about this give me a different # of inches. I have commonly heard about 11 3/8" for the front hanger and 4 1/4" for the rear, but many have also said different. Did you use a plumb bob to center the axle before you removed it? Any advice would be great!!

Thanks man! It is really hard to find a bed in decent shape with a nice tailgate. The bed that is on it now is actually a 2wd bed that is slightly modified. If I remember right when I did my 63's I just moved the front hanger forward about 11 1/2 inches, I don't remember the rear measurements. I did a plumb bob to center the axle as well. I'm going to be doing it all again shortly so I will make sure to mention how far I moved everything to help others with their builds.
Rust had a factor in it. It was pretty rough when I bought it. I think the other reason is from all the abuse it has taken and it just finally gave out.
Here are some pictures of the break on the old frame. First picture is the outside of the frame. Second is the bottom and the third is the inside of the frame. The last picture is how the replacement frame sits right now.
Got the frame cleaned up, stripped all the wiring and lines off it as well. Just have to cut the spring mounts off now. Then either sand it or have it sand blasted so I can start putting it back together.
Man, I sure hope that wasn't a load bearing zip tie...
Speaking of spring perches, I'll be welding on replacements for the cab/frame I just picked up a few weeks ago. The PO attempted to chop off the old ones. Not very successful, besides just dicking the whole thing up.
