Talking WabFab Off-Road's 1985 Ext Cab Build-Up Thread "Weasel"

1985 Extra Cab Pick Up
Found it locally - a friend called me about it last night
22RE - solid engine
Automatic - run it until I find parts at a good price to do a 5 spd swap
No frame rust
Front axle needs a knuckle service kit with bearings
Brakes suck - front and rear need replacing but I'll just convert the rear to discs/full floater
Gay Chrome rollbar
Bunjee cord battery mount
Bed rusted on floor by cab
Tailgute stuck closed
Lots of little things to do but it is a solid platform for a dedicated trail rig for one of my boys.

It has LOTS of potential as the cab is solid too.

Legally in about 8 years. So I have a while to have 3 trail rigs built. I might be done with my 85 4Runner by then.

You're gonna need a bigger trailer. . .

People die or trucks get sold. They are never done.

One of two things will happen, I will die, or the truck will be finished. I'm not sure which will be first.

The Marty McFly roll bar is out of the truck and in pieces. When I cut the bottom of it off at about 3 inches up from the mount plates...it was FULL of rust. The only way to get to the rusted to hell mounting bolts in the corners was to just cut the roll bar off as the bolts were unreachable from top or bottm as they had to be cut off as well. It does have some nice old WARN lights on it.

That's not a roll bar --it's just a place to mount lights

Nice Find Brian---

Some one's getting as bad as me. I just picked up another 4Runner myself. 1990 with a toasted automatic transmission. I was hoping it was something easy with the transmission but it's toast so I'm probably just going to part the truck out.

Sweet find Brian, right on!! The second I started on the thread, and seeing one of the boys in front of it in the pic, I knew you'd be going there!!

I doubt the kids will appreciate the McFly reference, as much as the rest of us over 25, but maybe make it both trail capable, and street capable. I think that's where you're going right??

Idea!!~Build up a new rollbar, and plumb it all up like Marlin did in his 85, then take your time, and don't let the oldest touch it for any amount of time, until his 16th B-Day high school graduation. Have him sit down every so often and watch Back to the Future, so he'll be hyped to go out and wrench with you on it.

Sorry, I just know that if I had not been wrenching/helping my father out as a kid, I never would've been a tool turner.

Subscribing!!

Like I said the other day, nice find! Looks like I need you to do some more work on my truck...I don't think you got enough to do there in T-town.

So does this ride get the garage treatment, instead of that nice grassy spot the '85 resides on . Oh and how's your wife taking all these toys...mine would be rolling her eyes every time she pulled into the driveway

Engine and tranny check out fine. No leaks on the engine that I see now, but if something pops up, I'll fix it then.

Well after checking out things here are some things I have to do before I can dd it a bit:
Knuckle service rebuild kit w/ wheel bearings
Front Vented Rotors
IFS 4 cyl loaded calipers
Rear axle seal/bearing kit - both sides
Rear shoes (covered in diff oil)
Rear drums turned
New rear brake line
Drive belts
Radiator cap
Wiper blades
Oil change
Battery Mount

Once I get it roadworthy again then I can start with the goodies.
