UKMyers' 1994 4Runner Build-Up Thread

Well it's finally time to get this posted. I have wanted to build a highly capable rig for a long time and now that my runner is not my DD anymore I've finally decided to get started. The story starts when I was coming home from Reno one weekend this fall. The GF and I had stopped to get some food and I spotted a sweet SASed 2nd Gen in the parking lot that judging by the looks of it had obviously been on the trail all weekend. I got to talking with the owner and found out he has done 3 SAS's and loved to fabricate stuff. We exchanged emails and contact info. Anyways I got in touch with him here recently to start researching my build and found out he was trying to get rid of his whole set up to rebuild his rig with 60's. Now that I had some axles it was time to start spending some cash! Here's the specs on the initial build up.

Front Axle:
-Housing trussed, plated steering stops, shaved drain plug, diff armor
-30-Spline Liongfield Chromo Axles
-Chromo Hub gears
-Fresh Rebuild
-FJ Rotors and ifs brakes
-Marlin Crawler High Steer Kit
-Backing plate eliminators
-Rock Ring Felt protectors
-Marlin Crawler 4cyl Diff w/ Yukon 5.29's and a Detroit Locker
-Triple Drilled Flange
-Solid Pinion Spacer
-Upgraded Steering Studs-Fully Rebuilt w/ new bearings throughout
-14" Bilstein 5150 shocks
-Trail Gear 4" springs and Swap parts

Rear Axle:
Diff Armor
Shaved Drain Plug
Yukon 5.29's
Detroit
Trail Gear 5" springs
12" Bilstein 5150's

Armor
Stubbs Welding Sliders
Marlin rear tube bumpers
Davez offroad front tube bumper
Dual Case Crossmember guard

Marlin Ultimate Crawler w/ 4.70's and 2.28 gears

37X12.5X15 Goodyear MTR's

Still deciding on which winch to go with.

And then of course there is all the recovery gear, on board air, and all that fun stuff to go along with it.

On to the pictures! The axles are still actually under the rig of the guy that I bought them from. He is taking it all apart this week while he builds his 60's.

Rear bumper

My front bumper is still being built but here is the design on a first gen.

I'm still waiting on my Trail Gear order to get here to start the surgery but keep checking back I'll update this thread regularly.

NIce! When you're done with yours, you can come down and do mine. Are you going to be doing all the welding and everything?

Well, this party has been going a while.

Why Chevy rears, especially with 4" fronts.

Pretty sure Cebby is now the last 2nd Gen from the old days who still has IFS.

The guy that I bought the axles from is doing the fab work. I'm going to help him out though during the evenings. Flygenstein to be honest I'm not postive on the rear springs. I just assumed that's what they were. You can see them in the picture of the rear axle. I'll have to double check exactly what they are. Cebby may be IFS but he's gonna have a V-8!!

Oh ya John I'm super anal about that kind of stuff. That'll be my primary purpose in helping out with this build.. so I can clean and prep parts..haha. That and help tearing it apart. I've always been good at taking things apart.. just not quite as good putting it back together! I want it to look nice when it's finished.

As long as you dont have too big of bucket with "lefover parts" in it.. you should be fine

Changed the parts list. I put in my order with Trail Gear today for their 5" springs. The guy I got the stuff from was originally doing a 4link rear but ran out of cash for now and decided to keep his leaf set up. I also ordered my dual case crossmember today. Calling Marlin the first part of the week to order my Ultimate Crawler from them.

Got it painted today but haven't gotten too excited about digging into the rusted bolts on my stock bumper and hitch. I think I might have to mod the mounts a little bit because of my body lift. Gonna have to mod my bushwhackers some too.

Got some work done tonite...

Bumper painted

Receiver hitch is off

Bumper is off

You can see here I have alot of work to do cleaning things up. It's interesting working on stuff that has never been taken apart before and is rusted all up. All the spray stuff is where I went to town with the PB Blaster before I started this afternoon. Yes my rear diff has been leaking oil out of the pinion seal. I could not believe the size of the some of the rocks that fell out from under the bumper and spare tire. I am going to have to cut my Borla exhaust off I guess because it's definately not going to work where it's at.

I also took all the spare tire junk out from under there. My cable unit still works good if somebody needs one.

Stay tuned for more updates.

John I noticed you had those on your truck also. I love em. I got the Elk Plate for my Taco when I got it too.

Well here's today's update. I just got off the phone with Marlin and my Ultimate Crawler box order is in. It should be built in about a week. I'm going to go to their shop and pick it up. I've always wanted to see some of the cool stuff they have around there. Final drive with my 5.29's will be 223.1!! For a comparison stock is 47.1..woohoo!!! That thing is going rock. They say you almost cannot kill the engine in low low first gear. Even if you drive up against something like a tree the tires will just dig holes in the ground as they keep turning.

Wow Joey, I'm excited to see this thing come together! Since you're gonna be down in the easy bay fabbing it, Call me! I'll swing by and check it all out. Maybe lend a wrenching hand and bring some beer.

Or, if you use your lockers, you can climb up poles and stuff.

Does that tell ya anything Cebby?? haha. I spent all afternoon today under my truck with a wire brush on my drill cleaning it up. It was pretty nasty under there. It still is actually but at least dirt doesn't fall on your head everytime you touch something. I'm going to wait to mount my new bumper until were done fabbing under there so it's not in the way. Just waiting on my Trail Gear order from Topher then she's off to the chopping block. Mr Delivery Man hooked me up with this stuff today too.. My Full Detroit was part of this order too I'm not sure what happened to it.

If its the same shop from a few years ago. It is very crowded with looots of stuff to gawk at. got to crawl all around his truck and check things out. Got a t-shirt and some other things because we picked the tranny up and he didn't have to ship it. Cool place dealt with his son Marlin was out, they opened up for us on a saturday, way cool experience.

They asked me what size T-shirt I wore. That shirt will totally make it worth the 3 hour drive and $2235 bill! Seriously though I'm sure the shop is way cool. And yes for those wondering that's what an ultimate box for a V-6 with the speedo sensor out the door costs!
