speedwagon86's 1986 4Runner Build-Up Thread

Well here it is my 1986 4runner. I have wanted one of these for a long time and I finally got one. Shes a little rough around the edges. The initial thing I want to fix is obviously the head because its leaking. The next few things on the list are new headlights and taillights, new seats front and rear, custom build dash for radio and cb, and new bumpers front and back. After I fix all of that and get it up to daily driver status I will begin adding some aftermarket items such as a lift, soft top, and lock box.

I cranked her up today and heard her run for a little bit. I cleaned out all of the interior and got some parts ready to install tomorrow. Hopefully get the motor taken apart enough for the new head install tomorrow.

I cleaned up the front skid plate and gas tank skid. They were just in the back of the truck and now I dont have the mounting hardware for them. Does anyone know what size bolts these two skid plates use?

I removed the radiator, fan shroud, battery, and intake over the weekend. The truck is going to be put on hold for a week until I get down with finals but then after that Im going to tear into it and hopefully get it running by christmas.

Well I hit the jackpot at the junkyard today. I found some decent condition 2nd generation 4runner front bucket seats. The drivers side is adjustable in like 5 ways and they both have adjustable headrests. The best part of these seats is that they are from a super rare 2 door 2nd gen 4runner so the passenger seat has the foot pedal slider for the rear passengers to get out. I also picked up some rear window up/down and lock switches. I got the seats and switches for a grand total of $28.

I got some time yesterday to get the old seats out and the new ones put in.

Here are some pictures
The old interior.

All cleaned out and the center console removed.

The new seats put in.

The new seats are well worth it and feel alot better and I plan on just getting some seat covers to put over them so that red wont stick out so much.

I drained the oil and got the valve cover off today. Im pretty sure I confirmed the bad head because I saw some coolant mixed in with the oil. Some good news though is the timing chain looks brand new and the internals that I could see so far look in pretty good condition.

I got some time today to work on more disassembly.
Here is a picture of how far along I am.

The reason I did not get any further along on taking it apart is because I went to go and pick these up.

I got front and rear bumpers, nerf bars, and front shocks for a really good deal. I really like how the rear bumper has a built it receiver hitch because I was really going to need one when I start driving this truck daily.

Well I have the head taken off now. It turns out the head gasket was blown on the driver side of the number 4 cylinder. I am getting a list of some parts that I need together so I can make an order. While the parts are being shipped I am going to paint some body parts and reinstall them.

does your runner have the stock rear bumper? if so would you be interested in selling it? I have been looking for a stocker for a while and have had no luck.

Well I got the head back from the machine shop. She looks real pretty almost dont want to put it back on the truck.

This is the teardown completed.

This is the damage from the broken guide and chain rubbing on the cover.

I painted the grill, center console, windshield wipers, and battery compartment today. Im going to replace the CV boot, rebuild the idler arm, and remove the oil pan tomorrow. I had a broken guide so I need to check the pan for broken bits. I also want to make some sort of inner mud flap for the front fender.

Thanks man I appreciate it.

I was rebuilding the idler arm today and come to find out the reason why it was so loose was the previous owner did not put a lower bushing in when he rebuilt it. So after two new bushings and some grease that idler arm feels much better now. I also replaced the ripped CV boot with a new boot.

Now for the bad news apparently I stripped the 3 idler arm frame bolts when I tried to torque them down. I also had to replace the manual hub cover bolts because 4 were missing. While replacing these bolts one of them broke off inside the housing. The hub on the other side is also not unlocking.

I got the rest of my parts in today including all of the needed motor parts and the exterior light housings that were broken. I put on the front marker light and rear taillight tonight. I will probably begin engine work this weekend but until then I will still be working on knocking out some small stuff that needs to be done.

Oh and ill get some good daylight pictures for yall to look at this weekend since work tends to take up all of my daylight during the week haha.

Do you need some specific motor pictures while I have mine taken apart?

I completed the zuk coil mod on my truck over the weekend. This got rid of the sag in the back and has a slightly raked look to it. It looks alot better now and I cant wait for this weekend to start on the motor work.

I fixed the drivers side manual hub that was not unlocking and it now turns smoothly and moves all the way to the locked position. Before it would not unlock the cv axle or move all the way to the lock position on the hub face cover. A hub rebuild is definitely in order down the road.
