Sounds like you are making some good progress...do you have a FSM?

I do. Did an internet search and found a 1985 FSM. I was pretty excited (massive understatement)

Didn't get as far as planned. Got the keys inserted into crank shaft, the gear moved that drives the oil pump, the oil pump installed, the timing belt cover installed, the water pump installed.

Tomorrow gonna get flywheel resurfaced, a replacement bolt that goes under camshaft that will then allow me to freeze the crankshaft (using stick of wood again) so I can torque on the camshaft bolt and crankshaft bolt (new bolt from dealership for that as well), then install oil pickup tube, oil pan, and valve cover.

That should then allow me to get that engine raised in the air so I can start reattaching everything else.

Still waiting on the LCE headers that I ordered almost 2 weeks ago... That's gonna make me mad if I'm waiting on the headers to start up the truck...

No LCE headers for me...

http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.p...4#post50456674

So I'm back to stock headers. I talked to Oregon engines again today (did I mention they have excellent customer service, newbies like myself need to use companies like them who will give us phone advice when we're lost... at least during working hours).

John said that headers are overrated until 6000 rpm and said that a free flowing cat and 2 1/4 to 2 1/2" exhaust with a good muffler would help me more. For now I'm just gonna run the stock setup.

I should probably redo my lift and body mounts anyway. One of the pucks is cracked and seperating down the middle and the body mounts look really bad (like you'd think 22 yr old mounts would look like).

I did get the flywheel resurfaced today for $45. Clutch kit came in as well. That was $90 shipped from eBay. It's an Aisin clutch so it should serve me well.

None of the 3 toyota dealers in Charleston have the crankshaft bolts in stock. I guess they will get them around 10:00 in the morning. Until then I'll have to find something else to work on...

Here's a picture of that body mount. I put an oval around the crack on the body mount...

Haven't done much else today for a lack of parts. I did drag the old exhaust manifold out of the backyard and strip the rust off of it. I put a coating of ceramic high temp paint on it. Gonna see how that holds up when I run it.

I have no clue, I just know that a crack there is probably not good. What is your opinion on losing the heat shield around the stock exhaust manifold? The intake manifold takes a suction on it when the engine is cold but I'm not sure how much good it does.

Someone asked for more pictures...

Went to the stealership and bought $50 worth of parts, filled all of my right hand... They don't call it the stealership for nothing!

Put the stick of wood back into the crankcase. I love redneck engineering!

Installed crankshaft pulley bolt (or harmonic balancer if you will). Torqued it to over 120 ft lbs. I may save the old bolt just to remind me of how much pain it took to get that thing off.

Installed the top bolt into the timing chain cover, torqued to only 9 ft lbs

Installed the distributor drive gear and torqued that bolt to 56 ft lbs (I think)

Removed stick of wood

Installed oil pickup tube. I can't believe there's no gasket here...

First I cleaned up the surfaces with paint thinner. Then I shaved the gasket material sticking out on the block and dabbed some FIPK material sealant at the 4 cracks on the block where stuff meets stuff, then installed gasket followed by my nicely painted oil pan, followed by torqueing all the bolts down to 9 ft lbs. I used a star pattern to try and avoid kinking the gasket.

Installed coolant tube and torqued it all down.

Ready to bring up the motor so I can install my newly machined flywheel. Speaking of which, I have to run to a shop to get the clutch release bearing pressed off. I can't budge it for anything.

No engine stand, I had to borrow both the engine cherry picker and the air compressor and impact wrench that you see.

Other than that I haven't had to borrow or buy any tools. Looks like I'll be begging the wifey for some air tools and a compressor next!

I can't really judge their quality but I have to say their customer service is top notch. They've answered so many questions. Even today I was calling asking about the clutch install and they helped me out.

Been busy, lots of pictures

I got the clutch release bearing pressed off for free at a local shop. Went ahead and put that in the truck. Notice the nicely painted heat shield? Used ceramic paint. Will see how it holds up later.

Time to finally lift the new engine off the pallet and reposition stuff in the garage.

New engine up.

Nice shot of the back of the engine.

The plate installed. Once again, I used ceramic paint.

Flywheel installed. Got it done by Simon's in West Ashley for $45. Took them 3 hours before they called saying it was ready. Cleaned the flywheel with rubbing alcohol.

Clutch installed. Haynes was vague and FSM gave no guidance so I called Oregon to get the correct side facing the transmission. Alignment tool was nice as well.

Carb came off of old engine now that is on the ground.

Bare engine. I felt like cheering.

Cleaned surfaces using paint thinner.

Tvv installed.

Carb surfaces cleaned up. Actually had to use my drill rust remover as some of the gasket material would not come off using razor blades.

Thermostat passes. Yep, I'm a geek but I've always wanted to do this test. Wife was not impressed.

Carb on new engine.

Thermostat installed.

Great idea, dunno whose but I like it!

Last shot for the night.

Busy day

Today I started by installing the other side's motor mount (not recommended unless you have a 3" BL like me, easier to install once in vehicle because you can't lower the engine with them installed to access the top tranny bolts).

Then I installed the alternator and a/c pump (not working I might add). Then I finished hooking up some small stuff, made 3 or 4 more trips to get little things from the parts stores and stealership.

After that I installed the valve cover, added some oil and I was ready to install.

Shot before I put it into the truck

Rear of motor prior to installing

Lowering it into the truck

Once it was in the truck I couldn't get it onto the tranny. I even tried the screwdriver trick where you stick a screwdriver on either side through the bolt holes to line it up. That helped a lot, by the way. Then I made sure I had equal spacing on all sides. It really seemed as if the tranny had a spring in it that would push the engine back at me every time I pushed it in. Can you figure it out from the picture?

Here's a better view

The way the chain is hooked on the rear side of the hook was making the chain act like a spring. Once I lowered the engine oil pan onto a 4x4 piece of wood on my jack and moved the chain around the engine slid onto the tranny like butter. All I did was crawl underneath the two and pull them together!

Next I installed all the bolts and the motor mount bolts.

Then I installed the starter. Now here's a question that tells how engine dumb I really am. Is the starter always engaged? Because as I was bolting it on, I moved the crankshaft to help it engage correctly. I thought I was okay so I finished torqueing down the starter. As I was doing that I heard a loud pop. I really hope I didn't break a tooth off of my flywheel... Maybe someone smarter than me can tell me. After that I finished bolting on my starter.

Tomorrow I'll probably hook everything up. Hoping to roof my house on Friday and Saturday so I'm probably gonna have to tow the truck off of the driveway so the delivery truck can pull up onto the driveway to lift the shingles onto the truck.

Still trying to get everything connected...

Here's a post in the general discussion forum. Thought I'd try where there'd be more people.

I'm stupid, the hose plugs into the air cleaner. New problem, though...

The engine turns over and will start with the aid of carb starter and then dies. Oil pressure is good as well. I pulled the outlet hose on the fuel pump and it's not pumping when the starter is rotating the crankshaft. I'm thinking I reversed some hoses or something...

Update: I compared my hoses to my neighbors 22r 2wd truck and they all look identical. Now I'm really stumped...

embarrasing...

Well the reason the truck wouldn't run is in this thread:

http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.p...1#post50464701

Basically I forgot to install the lobe thing that drives the mechanical fuel pump. I figured it out once I traced all the fuel lines and was able to pump fuel myself...

I did a seperate thread to try and get more help. As Wabbit and I have discussed, though, sometimes it just helps to sit down and type some stuff.

Anyway, the truck runs now. I got the coolant flowing with the upper radiator hose hot. No coolant or fuel leaks. Exhaust leaks in 2 locations: 1 on the manifold where I'm missing a bolt (couldn't find it -> probably rusted so bad I tossed it 3 weeks ago). Other location is a hose up by the brake booster cylinder. I just need to tighten that one. I'm gonna look for a bolt that will fit the manifold but I'm guessing that I may have to make another trip to the stealership. I'm probably gonna drive the truck around tonight a bit to see how the clutch holds up. Once I get a title tomorrow I should be able to put it on the road.

Tomorrow a buddy is coming to show me how to set the timing using the strobe light. He's also got a welder at his house to weld up the temporary sleeve I have connecting the exhaust manifold to the cat.

Already working on gathering all the fluids I need to change everything out. Next on my list is:

Replace f/r differential fluid
Replace manual transmission fluid
Change oil out at 100 miles and then again at 500 miles (doing the 100 because I'm not confident in my ability to keep the engine clean during my long build session)
Install new 3" body lift kit to replace the one that looks so bad now. Getting new body mounts since the old ones are in really bad shape.

Get SR5 instrument cluster to swap my current one. Any idea on whether the cluster changes from 22r to 22re?
Herculine bed on outside
Remove bed and paint/undercoat to prevent rust
Clean up and paint frame while bed is off
Herculine inside of cab after I rip out the cheapo vinyl in there now

I think the front axle is in pretty rough shape. I'll post pictures of all the junk on the insides. Thinking of ordering a 3" classic lift kit from TG from Wabbit. I wouldn't do the lift until I had chevvies ready for the rear but I could at least go ahead and redo the axle and install axle armor and stuff. Eventually I want the hi-steer when I'm ready to install power steering.

That engine sure is purty!

Been tearing apart my own perfectly good front axle all weekend to make it bomb proof...ain't wrenching great...that smell of grease and oil ground into your skin so no matter how much you wash it is there for a while...sore arms...shop looks like a tornado hit it...any of this ring a bell?

By lash the valves you mean valve adjustments, right? I don't know how to do that but I was planning on learning by the 500 mile mark.
