XJ wont start/hold idle...help? soon?

Hi all,

the lady friend's XJ crapped out at a gas station last night. Then the property was robbed, and the thief took her bike. Now she has no way to get to engineering school. The jeep forums are populated by half-wits so I thought I would risk the mockery and post here.

Symptoms:

a) turned XJ off to fill with gas.
b) failed to start with single click
c) extended jump resulted in start but the engine would die if the revs weren't kept over 1000.
d) just charged the battery. single click, no start.

In a bind here. My truck is in pieces because I was taking a little time to do some welding and I'm stranded when I would like to be driving around looking for the scumbag that stole our stuff.

The XJ has the 4.0 and is an automatic.

THanks!

should note that the battery is only two months old. I am currently checking the harness for breaks and refitting the connection to battery terminals.

if you're getting a single click, there is a good chance that the starter has failed and needs new contacts. But, you say when you got it started, it would die.
Here is what I know about mopar products;
weak fuel pumps
crank sensor on the bell housing fails.
Both these items would mess with the the idle and starting.

Thanks Vital!

Well, it turned out to be a bs issue. a) the bolts that hold the clamps on the terminals had backed out. Don't know how. b) the line to the starter was filthy with alotta broken strands and old corrosion built up, and c) the same line was uninsulated about two feet from the starter.

Easy peasy. Now I just need to find the jackass that robbed us. Got my tools out, it's hammertime.
