I know this is non-toyota related but reading through so many threads I have TREMENDOUS respect for alot of the mechanics on here and was wondering if you could at least pick your brains a little bit.

Soooo i am working away from my family, about 800 miles away, planning a trip home next week and get a call from the wife. I knew it was bad....
Before i left home for work, i bought her a 1989 Nissan Pathfinder, Auto.

she was driving and swears everything was fine NOTHING was odd at all. After about 20 minutes she notices thick white smoke and thought it was another car, kept going.....
Realized it was coming from under the hood she pulled over and said there was a ATF pouring everywhere. From the top and bottom of the transmission. Apparently it was hitting the exhaust causing the smoke.
She got back in, started right up but the transmission will not engage. The transmission did not lock up, but it just revs.

I am NOT a transmission guy! I have taken a couple out and put a couple in but never on an automatic.
What the heck happened??? I know there is alot of info missing but this is all she knows.

Any thoughts appreciated!!!

start with the fluid level ATF is the lifeblood of autos. No fluid~ no go. Fill and see if you can see any obvious leaks

Had some friends go look at it. They are thinking it's the front tranny seal. Had the wife go by a new one and I will be throwing it in on Saturday.
