i'll wait for a warmer weekend to glass the holes. the gel-coat is cracked, but nothing serious. just a lot of sanding and painting in my future

and i found some pics online of the boat with the sail. anyone know what the lambda means? Λ

Those pictures from the net are of two different boats so I think you have the correct sail. The looseness is to allow it to catch wind. Wm. Mills made all the canvas and cushions for the early MA made Whalers. The are still in business and they are very pricey. If your Squall is pre 1973 it is supposed to have the blue interior and white exterior. If it's newer it's a light tannish color, I can't remember it's name.
www.Jamestowndsitributors.com stocks Epiphane paint and Awlgrip that will match and their service is fast.

i found out today that it was made in december of 1975. no blue.

so with the sail, you're saying that style of sail was made for both the sunfish and squall? as per the parts diagram, it looks like it came with a |\ shape instead of the /\ that i have now. dunno...

thanks for all the info! i gotta find time to work on it a bit more, but it's coming along. next step is to drain the water ...oh joy

Why do you think it's from Sunfish? IIRC a Sunfish has sort of an oval mast that is about 4" at the widest part. I can't really tell from the internet but it looks like your mast is round and about 2". Is the sail cut for a wider mast? Based on the pics from the intenet it looks like your sail is identical to the other Squalls. There might be a possibility that your mast and boom came from another model of boat. In the 1970's there tons of wanna-be Sunfishes that sold for about $120. The one we have for the kids has a 45sq ft. lateen sail. I've never seen a Squall in person so I couldn't say. You might try to google Mills and see if they still sell those sails. I know they wanted over $300 for a BW cover I got from a place in MI for $124. Mine was USA made too. Brrr. It seems too cold to work on boats right now but I guess you have to if you want to have a full season with it. You really have to keep the water out of the boat because the foam will absorb it plus the freeze/thaw is bad for the fiberglass. Next year flip it over for the winter. The wood thwart seat you have will look great with some sanding and varnish. I keep my wood parts in the house.

Here's the site for Mills. They list the Squall but you'll have to email them for a quote: http://www.millscanvas.com/frame_index2.htm

the only reason i think it's from a sunfish is that's what i saw pics of on the google. but i'm no expert, and i know i have a lot more to learn.

i read up on the water ingress, and most sites say to drill, with a hole saw, just the top layer of fiberglass where the water can drain. i think it could work, does that seem right to you?

and yeah, that bench will be getting de-splintered before i even take it out for a motor-powered test.

I think there's lots of opinions on the drilling of holes to dry the foam. My boat was a fixer that probably had a tree branch fall on it at some point. I'm pretty sure it has dried out due to bing flipped upside down under a carport for over a year and now it's under a carport, on its trailer with a cover. One of the first things I did after all the paint stripping and power washing (be careful of that) was to replace all the drains with Schedule 40 PVC and 3M 5200 sealer. The foam didn't feel wet. I've read that even if the foam is saturated the boat will still float, just not as proud. I know it's kind of cold still but before you go drilling holes you should try to float it and see if it's acceptable. The thing should weigh about 135 lbs. I think so that's why it was difficult to flip by yourself. Nose around Whaler Central and notice that the people who drill holes stop posting there so I'm not sure they are successful. I don't visit there much anymore because it's hard to post pictures and most of the regulars and the list owner are snobby. They have little use for anyone not paying the marina $4k to spray new gel gloss. They are also dismissive of Squalls. Just use the search feature. I found the dimensions for your sail:

http://www.sailrite.com/Boston-Whale...FQY5nAodYy4A0Q

So for $196 you can get a sew it yourself kit! I hate to see what Wm Mills would want! If you have tears in the one you have you can patch it with sail tape until you are rich. And when you get that huge yacht some day it'll look great as a tender.

i can tell you this: it ain't anywhere close to 135#. when i picked it up, it took 4 of us, and was still heavy. i think "saturated" is an understatement. i know it'll float (math says so), but moving it around, loading/unloading, and anything else isn't easy. it's flipped right now, so at least water can't pool anywhere. i think i'll drill two small holes in the top-inside of the transom, just to see if it will drain at all. if not, it's an easy patch to make.

also, thanks for the link. the sail itself is in great condition, nothing so much as a frayed thread on the whole thing. i got a great deal with this, even if the boat is waterlogged with a hole in it

Did you ever find the thread where someone took a Squall that was being used as a mail box post in Alaska and tried to dry it out? It is discouraging. I think he left it inside for a couple of years:
http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cet...ceaPage67.html

Holy heck, I just Google image searched "Boston Whaler Squall water foam" and a ton of images popped up. There should be hours of reading enjoyment ahead of you. Will your parents let you move the Whaler home to prop in the garage a couple of years?

Honestly my Whaler got lighter over the years by keeping it out of the elements. There was never any dramatic drip of water from it. There was lots of damage down to the foam on the interior so maybe it "breathed" a little. I enjoy this discussion. It wouldn't be hard to repair any holes you drill but I think it will take a long time for the water to evaporate. Maybe reapair any holes you have now so no more water gets in, float it and decide if you must drill it and drip dry.
