Protection while mountain biking off road

Protection while mountain biking off road
So I have been reading a lot lately online and in the various mountain bike magazines I read each month that it is a good idea to have some sort of armor on while riding off road.
The mags are full of pictures of downhill racers, 4X, and XC riders wearing Six Six One knee pads.
I was all set to get the Kyle Strait ones from them until I read an article here.
http://www.vitalmtb.com/features/Pro...h-Knee-Pads,55
The reviewer compares them to the Kyle Straits but that the Fox do not slip down your leg like the Six Six Ones do.
So I took the plunge and ordered them on Monday.
My Fox Racing Launch Knee Pads came yesterday.
Wearing them right now while doing a few chores this Thanksgiving, just breaking them in.
First set of pads, feels pretty strange having something on my knee there.
But as I age (hitting 53 next spring) I think it is a good idea to protect the knees when out riding.
I will not wear these for exercise around the neighborhood, but will be taking them with me when I get the bike off road from now on.
I may go for elbow pads later too, not sure yet.
I did injure my left patella on my knee (hairline fracture) many years ago skiing, and that hurt.
Especially when having to use the clutch the whole way from from the mountain where my sons and I had skied that day.
I may feel silly when wearing these off road, but if they save my knee from an injury and keep me from missing work, then they were worth the small investment of $60.
Fox has a few videos here as well as the reviewer does in the link above.

Foxes link to buy them
I bought mine directly from Fox, as most shops around here do not even stock them yet since these are so new to the scene.
Who else wears knee or elbow protection when mountain biking off road?

Sorry to get off topic, but you and my dad are the same age! He snowboards, still does construction, and still a CHP of 30 years. I cant believe he still gets up into the park with us, he doesnt take the big hits, but boxes, rails, the easier stuff. Alright, sorry man, threadjack over.

I don't mountain bike but would very much enjoy a picture of you wearing pads while preparing a Thanksgiving feast.
I would say, if you never wear pads while biking on the trail, you are asking for a world of hurt....fractured patella.....OUCH!!

Since the inception of the Internet and other computer related things (forums) I have slacked off on staying fit.
Before I got into computers back around Christmas of '94, I was 150 lb with a 31" waist.
My sons and I were always skiing, mountain biking, doing something.
I got back into biking this year with the main goal to recapture that body I use to have
Now I hit the local casino (leaving very soon) for a big feast and let them do the dishes.
When I injured my patella long ago, it was just a hairline.
I was still able to go to work and everything, but I was sore for awhile.
I was back up there skiing within a few weeks too.
And speaking of protection, I never ride without a helmet.
Even if it is for five minutes only testing out the bike in the parking lot after making an adjustment on it.
There is no redo button or respawn like in a video game.
Gotta play it safe.
Now only if the weather would get nicer here so I could go for a ride on the bike.
One storm coming in after another here for the past few weeks.
