tricks to clean mud stained tires?

my tires (Destination MT's) have turned a brownish color after much offroading (and mud).

tried cleaning them the ol' fashioned way with soap n' water but still seem to be brown?

anybody know how to clean em' to get em back to matt black? WITHOUT having to use something like (armour-all) that leaves shiny enough to see your reflection in. (hate that crap)

just want em back to the original flat black...any tricks?

Thans,
-B

Some good degreaser such as Simple Green or Purple Power and a good scrub brush always works well for me.

degreaser and use a pressure washer. 1500psi gets the job done....car wash is 1300 here.

I always use Amour All All Purpose Cleaner, not the normal Amour All. This stuff doesn't leave a shiny finish. I spray it on and then take a brush to the tire and then rinse it off.

Dare I say it, its also really good at getting white lettering back to white.

PERFECT SOLUTION!
Easy and cheap-ish.
Westleys Bleche-White and a scrub brush. Spray it on a dry tire, wet a scrub brush and scrub away, all the dirt will come off very easily. It is a white-wall and black-wall cleaner. It leaves it a fresh clean black like you wanted.

Also I think Westley's bleche wite cleaner works well. I use it to clean my tires and it gets the brown off and makes the letters white.

edit: I took too long to find the correct spelling on the net, that I got beat to the punch.

I've always used good old fashioned Comet (or Ajax) and a stiff brush. Makes em look brand new without chemicals that I've always suspected aren't good for the rubber. (I hate the armor all look anyhow.)

Is Comet good for the tires?

Mine get dirty but after a couple of rain storms they lose the muddy stains and then I use Meguire's Endurance Tire stuff and it works very well and keeps tires looking dark for about a month.

Anotehr vote for Bleche White, works very well. I recently cleaned up my two 8 year old 33x9.50 spares (up front) to match the 2 new 33x10.50s (in back) and they look like new

Westley's makes some AWESOME stuff...another thing to use either on its own or in addition to the Westleys is AJAX powder bleach (somebody said they now have a pre-mixed version of it), sprinkle it on, get a nice tough brush and rock and roll. It's only $.94 at Wal-Mart too!

I will admit, Westleys is what I use most of the time.

Oil can degrade rubber right? If so that doesn't seem smart

Wal-Mart is the cheapest I've found.

Also, I don't think WD-40 would be all that great for your tires...it would leave em all slimy until it evaporated, even then it would get soaked into the rubber...just doesn't seem like it would work that well.

another firm believer of westley's bleech white here. Using a stiff brush with this stuff would be the key.
