Nitto Mud Grapplers are affordable. You can go upwards from there in $$ Trxus and Interco some people love em and some hate em. Read ratings on TireRack or Discount or Google.
I don't think you buy a tire like this for extended wear so just keep in mind mileage could be disappointing also. I'm certainly no expert in mud but you deserved a response certainly.

With the 265/75/16s you could experience rubbing at the front mudflaps under 3/4 to full turn in/out. Compression of the wheel well could also cause some rubbing-again usually at the mudflap only.
Even with my mild Old Man Emu spring lift I still would rub front factory mudflaps on my SR5. Note I am a 99 and slightly taller than yours would be stock, however I did not have the tall 99 springs.265/70s were just fine but when I upsized my troubles began with the flaps. Be aware that even within a stated size LT tires may have a slightly different tread depth and overall circumference larger than a P-assenger series rated tire. Check your specs carefully for whatever exact tires you choose between. I am not aware of 31 x 10.50s in a 16 inch rim size. I am no expert. the 235/85/16 or even 255/85/16s are gaining some popularity. Again- check your specs carefully. The tread width is approaching a critical skinniness that some may find uncomfortable, in other cases people say it is not noticeable. Depends on your driving style. If you like to fling your Runner around corners I would discourage the 85s myself. Discount Tire or Discount Tire direct dot com have good charts full of useful info. Compare notes with those of us posting our tire sizes and get a whole bunch of opinions. Don't hesitate to ask around in 96-02 Runner section. Page back just a few days and you will see lots of tire threads.

Does not sound like you really need a mud terrain but perhaps you just like the look?
You can certainly do better than the BFGs. Nothing against them-I never cared for the way they wore after about 2 years they got hard and chunky on me. Many of us run Nittos Terra Grapplers and I would say you pretty much get what you pay for. They run a few dollars less than maybe some other tires and do just fine. I would avoid Pep Boys tires and stick to a name brand-Bridgestone makes some fine Duelers in various grades up to Revo. Coopers are great tires a little more rare. Hankooks are getting some notice recently-the choices are endless.

the simplest answer to your question is to stick with the stock factory size and backspacing. You already have some rubbing so I think the only option is wheel spacers as I understand it. I am not recommending wheel spacers.
Politely I would suggest that unless your motor is fresh and your diffs and all seals are in tip top shape you are pushing your luck running 33x10.50s. Cut back an inch to 32s or to slightly less width to achieve similar results with no rubbing. Your gears may thank you. I am no tire expert but did have a 2nd gen with the 22Re with 5 speed. Output of the 4cyl versus 3slow motors was actually pretty similar and you must be rowing quite a bit to get the most out of it. 'Course you got that lack of altitude thing working for ya.

I ended up going with a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers in a 235-80-17 and am running them on stock 17 wheels rattle canned black. That narrow bought me a couple more miles to the gallon and no considerable increase in noise from the stock "drag slicks". Performed very well in the mud and snow in Wyoming the first time out and now with about 5000 miles on them - I couldn't be happier. Think they are about 32.8" tall - so tall enough - but that skinny is where the action is. Very happy on & off road.
Of course - being able to crawl over large rocks and boulders doesn't mean that you should.... so I quickly connected with one when I slid off a rock and wrapped that cheesy plastic drivers side bumper wrap - straight up in the air so I could see it through the rear view. Popped off the drivers side rear tail light in about 4 pieces.... but the tires are the best I've had so far - and I've always run BFGs and Cooper STTs.... |

1999 4Runner - can I use 15" wheels?
I just got a 1999 4Runner SR5, and it came with the stock 265/70R16 tires. I have 235/75R15 winter tires that I bought for a great deal and would like to keep... Can I put 15" wheels on my truck?
I went to an online tire size calculator and it said that it's a 5.66% diameter difference, and anything over 3% may result in brake failure... |

If your 4RUnner was equipped with 16" wheels, you CANNOT use 15" rims. They will not clear the calipers.

I think Toyota put that same sticker on most every truck if any of the models came w/ 15" wheels. When they built the body (and put the sticker in), they probably did not know what size wheels would be attached to the axles that ultimately ended up under that vehicle.

I think you are correct Roger.
It depends on what options the truck was built with from the factory, but i have never seen a sticker that didn't say 15" rims, even on Limited 4Runners which all had ABS and 16" rims.

Yes, I think Toyota must have bought a boat load of those stickers, or they just forgot to change it over the years. The same thing happened on the earlier '90s models with the 31" tire option, even though they came w/ 31x10.50 tires, the door sticker still listed 225/75R15.
