BFG MTs (255/85r16) Advice/opinions?

So im starting to look at tires... I really like the BFG ATs but they dont make them in the size im looking for. Im really looking for a 33x10.5 but i cant find too much. Well i came across the MTs which are offered in a 255/85r16. the site says the specs are 33.3 by 10 on a 7 inch wheel... PERFECT... but A: I want something that is good on the street as well as off road.. and i heard the MTs arent up to par on the road... and B: im not sure if i really want a 33.3 if i have to regear... i would perfer not to regear or loss too much power... so do i stick with 32s? i have 265/75s now. so do i just stick with those?? i need some opinions / advice here... help me out

The 255/85 is typically a D range tire. It's meant for a work truck that is hauling a lot of weight so it will have a very stiff sidewall. So it's going to ride very stiff compared to the stock p-metric.

I have these on my 4runner. The ride improved alot over the 265/75 Rugged trails that were on before. I have no complaints whatsoever about these tires. The only thing they arent so great in is sand.

I've got cooper discoverers in 255/85/r16

Quite similar to the BFG's. I like them a lot. Yes there is a power loss and it doesn't ride as good as stock. But heck, that's what a truck is for.

And it really isn't bad at all. I've been in FAR worse vehicles.

nice, I'm starting to think about these tires more and more too, dont think they would look too skinny on 16x8 rims with 4"BS, and they would probably require a lot less trimming with a smaller lift. Any thoughts on re-gearing too? I know oly said he lost a little bit of power. subscribing here.

While I can't specifically comment on your desired tire size (I have the 285/75/16's), I can state that the BFG M/T's were an excellent choice of tire for me. I've had them for about 200 miles and the ride is amazingly quiet, the balancing was effortless for the tire installer and the look is pretty darn good. I've had them off-road last week-end and they really did well in the deeper snow and mud. So far, I'm very pleased with them. Even the power hit was negligible compared to the seemingly heavier 265/75/16 TrXus M/T's that were previously on my 4runner (the TrXus still seem stiffer and thicker).

I thought about regearing, but that's a lot of money. And really, the power loss isn't substancial. Heck, I even have 500lbs worth of gear in the back at all times. I can still go 75mph over the passes along I-90 in MT.

The MT's aren't all that bad on the road. I have D-range 285 MTs and really I didn't see much difference between my old AT's.

I have no lift. I'm going to end up getting a 2" lift this summer.

There's slight rubbage, but not too bad.

I think he means a 33x10.5-16. I have seen these for 15" rims, but not the 16s. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I searched and could not turn up anything for a 33x10.5 on a 16" rim. And found very little on a 255/85/16.

I like that size of tire. I saw some on a taco, valentines day at the restaurant. They looked good I thought. Filled up the wheel well good and don't look that skinny unless you have to have that wide look.
I have looked into these tires some. Some of the ones in that size are the BFG MT, Cooper discoverer ST and STT (the ST being an All Terrain). There are others but those are probably your best bet in that size. If you want the MT, I wouldn't get the BFGs, I'd go with the Coopers. Get the ST if you want an AT and the STT if you want a MT. Just do a search for COOPER or COOPER DISCOVERER or ST or STT etc....

Yeah... As far as a 16inch wheels goes i could not find a 33x10.5

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/asset...rain_ta_kd.pdf

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/asset...rain_ta_km.pdf

both show all sizes offered and neither offer a 33x10.5r16. the 255/85r16 is the closest.

as far as the D range goes... the revo 285/75r16 is a D range tire, and also the BFG AT 285 and the coopers of similar size.

plus (which baffles me) the BFG MT 255/85 is 52lbs according to the website... which is 4 pounds less than the 33x12.5 ATs and MTs. less sprung weight is always good.

Im looking more into the coopers but i cant find a decent size.... nothing close to a 33x10

cooper makes the discoverer S/T in a 255/85r16 but Im not sure if its agressive enough look. I think i would need to see it in person.

Im not too sure about the nittos... im not too familair with the brand so therefor i have no confidence or experience with them. any other good brands out there?

I am running the 255/85/16 on stock 16x7 wheels, and a three inch lift. they are awsome off road but suck a little on the highway, their a little more noisy and i am running stock gears i get great milage on the highway, but not so good in town, they convert to a 33''x10'', i would definately not run them on a wider wheel, they would look really skinny, i orderd mine from wal-mart b/c they price match tire rack and you don't have to pay shipping for $149 a tire. i will try to get some pics this week.

Just to interject - I was driving today next to a wrangler and I started thinking what the heck is that noise? I turned down the radio and listened thinking maybe something was wrong with my truck. The wrangler was running mtrs and I had heard they were noisy, but I didn't think they would be that loud.

They do look like a mean tire though.
